Default buying a laptop
Right could someone point me in the right direction cos i feel like im getting nowhere. I want to buy a laptop for uni next year and i also want it as a kind of desktop replacement. I have been looking at alienware and rock. Any others that i should look at. my price range is about 1200 pounds. I want a good enough gaming machine that is portable enough so i can carry into uni everyday. Any help will be appreciated

thanks

Well my advice is I'm assuming your next uni year will start in September, so I'd wait till closer to then as prices will fall.

If you can't wait then I'd also say that you'll struggle to get better spec than rock for the price tbh, also a desktop replacement won't be portable atall lol, I bought an Acer 5633 last year that apparently weighed 2.9kg and that was a pain in the ass to carry around, and I'm not a small/weak guy atall.

I've just returned in from a drinking session so when I sober up in the morning Ill actually try look out some sexxy laptops for you

ok maybe not a desktop replacement but just a good laptop that will play new games (not in full res of course) and one that is portable. So is Alienware any good? I was thinking about maybe the Aurora M7 range

Alienware is good, but pricey. You are paying a lot just for the name. I have been presently surprised by ASUS as of late. A friend of mine bought one in January and it has been great. It's a Core 2 Duo 2 GHz, 1GB of RAM, x1650 etc and was about $1300. I just bought another ASUS laptop for work. It's a Core 2 Duo 1.8GHz, 1GB of RAM, 8400M, 160GB, 14" screen for just $1300. It weighs just a hair over 5 pounds. If you can get them where you are at, you may want to take a look at them.

When I was pricing them out, other brands like Dell, were a few hundred more for the same specs. Also a good thing to keep in mind is to get them with little ram as possible and upgrade it yourself. Most vendor overcharge for memory. You can get a 1GB stick of DDR2 for around $40-$50. Dell will charge another $100 or more just for that extra stick.

What about the new MacBook Pro?

With the educational discount, you should be able to get the following for under £1200:

2.2Ghz C2D
2GB RAM
120GB HD
DVD writer
Geforce 8600GT 128mb (DX10 GPU)
15inch LED backlit display
wifi N, Bluetooth 2.0
Apple remote
backlit keyboard
built in camera

You can just install Windows on the thing for your gaming needs.
