Default New Wi-Fi distance record: 382 kilometers
"Researcher Ermanno Pietrosemoli has set what appears to be a new record for the longest communication link with Wi-Fi.

Pietrosemoli, president of the Escuela Latinoamerica de Redes (which means networking school of Latin America) established a Wi-Fi link between two computers located in El Aguila and Platillon Mountain, Venezuela. That's a distance of 382 kilometers, or 238 miles. He used technology from Intel, which is concocting its own long-range Wi-Fi equipment, and some off-the-shelf parts. Pietrosemoli gets about 3 megabits per second in each direction on his long-range connections. ....................................

Boosted or unboosted?

I knew one of the old records was like 115 miles over in Nevada US. and it was unboosted. They were on top of two mountain tops and sent the signal over Las Vegas.

I would imagine they had a huge amp as well as 2 really good antennea's. I had a friend bring a 2 watt amp and a huge antennea over and we hooked them up to my orinoco card. Ive never seen so many wifi networks in kismet before.

I had a call at work one day:

"I bought a laptop off you with wireless which works fine at home, but I'm down my mothers house and it doesn't work"

"Where's your mothers house?"

"Southend".

Amazing how often we get people who think they just buy a Wireless router and £15 card and they can tour the country using their home broadband system.
