That Australia thing sucks, though. However we have hit a brick wall with the old copper network, it simply can't deliver high speeds to the majority of homes and can't offer large amounts of data at low cost. The reality for many Aussies is... dial-up (if not living in a city) or shitty ADSL @ 1.5Mbit. |

It is... and now it's really starting to really make headlines in news that the Australian communications network is a disgrace for a wealthy country. To get a semi decent speed and download limit you need to pay good money. Once you start paying $30 a month (about what most average people want to pay) or less most ISP's offer download limits of a pathetic 500MB or lower... either they get speed capped to 64K once over the limit or they get charged massive $$$ per gigabyte. For example my ISP will charge $150 a gig if you're on a 500MB plan and you go over the 500MB. ![]() |

![]() that's with IINET in Melbourne. it should be higher, it's just that i think that the site can't give enough to download fast enough. on the rare occasion i can find a fast enough d/l site i've maxxed out the line at about 2.2 megaBYTES/sec like from softpedia.com d/l Directx9 in april. so i think the speedtest.net is having difficulty shoving enough data to ADSL2 people. if the test lasted longer then it would reach max, but it stops too quickly. i agree with what's been said above about the shaping and the shitty usage limits. i'm paying $70 with Voip and that gives me 20 gigs peak and 40 gigs off peak. i go through 5 gigs a day easily if i use the net without fear of limit. however now i have to be careful because surfing at 7k (yes barely twice dial-up!) when shaped is hell. IInet have come for some stick for the new usage plans, and they're one of the BETTER ISP's ! there's really little point in having anything above 10 megabit bandwidth as i've yet to find any website that is faster than about 6megabit. unless there is a download somewhere on the net, most websites are not anywhere what adsl2+ can offer, it's only cool when you d/l something or use p2p. for others maybe there is the benefit of having more users on the network, or if your hosting a site from home, those kind of things. from a common user that is browsing, out of all the hops in the chain of computers that are between you and your desired website, the fastest is less than 10megabit usually. ![]() |

Nice 1... I remember back when I thought 256Kb DL was awesome lol I remember getting a 56K modem and wondering if that was fast enough to run a QuakeWorld server, lol. |
