Default Recommend me a GOOD book like LOTR!
I am seeking a book of adventure that will take me on a journey like LOTR books!
I read the Hobbit and LOTR, so those are out of the picture.

I don't want a SET of books, but just one big enough book to do the job!

Fantasy-style, please. Nothing realsitic. Its something to get away!

Moby Dick by Herman Melville not quite the same as LOTR but an adventure all the same.

Actually the more I come to think of it the more comparisons I can see.

The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant by Stephen Donaldson.

It's six books really but you can get in in two very big books.

Thats too much. I want something to finish 5-6 days of heavy (not super heavy) reading!

The Dark Tower series by Stephen King, of course! 7 books written over 30 years, they are his ultimate work and the best I have ever read. One of his inspirations was lord of the rings, and the structure is fairly similar, a journey with a 'ka-tet' (fellowship).
It's very much a fantasy, though has heavy western, horror and science fiction influences. Cross The Lord of the Rings, The Good, The Bad and The Ugly, the Dark Materials trilogy and your getting there.

Here's a trailer for the first comic which has just been released. Gives you a feel for the story. If there's not enough fantasy in there for you, well just read the books and you'll see. Portals, magic orbs, parallel worlds, undead, giant bears etc.

If you limit yourself to a 'quick fix' you'll miss out on a load of great stories. But if it has to be one book, then the Talisman by Steven King and Peter Straub could be the one for you.

The Children of Hurin

Ok so it isn't out yet, but it is from Christopher Tolkien using J.R.R Tolkiens manuscripts.
I hope it's good, it should be out next month anyway.

I can't name any one book that will take you on a great adventure like that. There are a number of series that are quite excellent though.

A Song of Ice and Fire by George R.R. Martin

The Wheel of Time by Robert Jordan(can get very long winded though)

The Book of Words Trilogy by J.V.Jones

The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant by Stephen R. Donaldson

Most anything written by R.A. Salvatore

Most anything written by Raymond Feist

The first one by George R.R. Martin is really great. Fantastic character development.

I hope that means that you're bringing a book to the beach and no more than that. I loved Hawaii and brought one book. I didn't even get to the 3rd chapter while I was there. Too much to do and see.[thumbup]

So, your recommendations for books stay the same even if its Hawaii beach vacation?

Similarion - Tolkien

It's different, but gives you great insight into things like Annatar (Sauron's 'friendly' form), the making of the rings, The rebellion of Morgoth and the Maia.

If you want something more contemporary, David Eddings is a very Tolkien-inspired author.

If you want something totally different, try Dragon's Egg.

His Dark Materials series by Philip Pullman. Tends not to get mentioned since its appeal is ageless, but I can really think of no finer fantasy series.

I agree 100%

There is no finer piece of literature of the hybrid sort in the last 50 years...maybe ever. There's just so much variety in that series and since it was never rushed, everything flows so well and the prose illicits so much imagery, it's utterly fantasy-tastic.

If you're even a fan of Lost, you'll appreciate the series even more. [thumbup]
