Not sure if this is the right thread but...
Can someone point me to a really accurate article on how to setup a Home Network? My computer is using Win XP Pro and my wife's is Win XP Home. We are sharing a router. Also, using SBC Yahoo. I ran wizard on both but they still can't see each other. Is there a 3rd party software that would be more useful than Windows version? Thanks |

This needs to be done on your XP Pro Machine. OK, go to open up my computer, and on the top where there is file, edit, etc click on tools and then go down to folder options. Click on that and a window should come up that has the name "Folder Options" There should be four tabs on within. Click on the tab called View. A list should be within the screen, so scroll all the way down to the bottom and there should be an option "Use Simple File Sharing" Click on the box so there is a check mark next to it, so that way it is enabled.

Hmm, it might be that you aren't on the same workgroup. Right click on my computer, go down to properties, and then click on the computer name tab. On this tab. go down to rename this computer or join a domain, click change, well click that button and then a new screen comes up. On the screen make sure that on the pro machine, Workgroup is selected and type in the Workgroup you want, I have mine set as MSHOME. On the other machine, do the same though I think all you can see on the is the workgroup. Make sure that it is the same as the XP pro machine. Restart your computers.
Also you need to make sure that you are actually sharing something, like your C drive. If you aren't you won't see anything. One more thing, that if you are sharing something and you can't see the other computer you can manually type the IP address of the other computer so long as you are on the same subnet. For example you want to access the Pro machine from the home, then you would type \\IP-ADDRESS. this should being up the other computer's shared resources. |

I basically just want to use the printer that is set up on her computer and that is about it. Then share a folder on each, right click on any folder, click sharing, click "share this folder on the network". You might get a warning box asking if its ok, click "just enable file sharing" then in the run box type \\computername, poof, there are all the folders shared on the other computer. as for the printer all you have to do is right click on it, click sharing and do the same thing you did with the folder. then on the other computer, add printer, go to network, and hit browse, it should find it automatically. OS versions and workgroups have very little to do with it working, here at work our main computer has all the files i use regularly (avg,firefox,IE6 for 98/2000/xp) and i go to it from a huge range of messed up, old and crappy computers everyday. If by chance you ran the xp home network setup wizard... i don't know how to fix that lol. |
