It seems physics begs to differ...

For now yes. There are already successful experiments with wireless power solutions. Far off from mainstream, but we will get there one day.

I think it would be more impractical than impossible.

From "impossible" to "not that soon" in one easy link. [beta]

Nice, I suppose you don't have to worry about anyone trying to steal them either.

There are no warning labels so someone would probably try.

How well do your bike gloves work with the scroll wheel? I've never had good luck with it unless it's direct skin contact. In the winter, I use my nose to dial the volume up and down just so I don't have to take my gloves off.

And the wireless power... why is it so hard to imagine? My electric toothbrush charges that way already. There was an article about this in the latest popular science, I believe. All you have to do is generate an electric field, and have something with an inductor in it that runs perpendicular to the field. The field will pass through the inductor coils and generate current in it.

Personally, I wouldn't mind just coming home and dropping my phone, ipod, and laptop off on a charging-equipped table and forgetting about it. It would sure beat having to search for all my cords all the time.

The only issue I can see right now is that the amount of power available for wirelessly charging devices is quite limited. I think it was something comparable to the amount of current a USB port provides. So it probably couldn't power a laptop while it's running yet, but smaller devices like phones and pdas should be okay.

It's not magic, really.

I know someone who just got some winter gloves that had a liner with some special fingertip that was supposed to work with ipods.

I think the problem with wireless was that it was really innefficient. I think it's just an electric field so that if you had two points there would be a voltage difference between the points, you can light a florecent bulb with a vandograph this way. Your toothbrush sits in a cradle right? I think that's more like a transformer, with your toothbrush being one side of it.
