And they did wear armour, but not full body armour as the reviewer was insinuating. The way the review was written it sounded like he took offence to the fact that man skin was on display. God knows what he would have thought if they were wearing a skirted tunic. |

Yeah it is an odd tack to take. I mean if I wanted to critique the film from a historical perspective I wouldn't pick on the armour. The more disappointing part is the disappearance of all the other Greeks who fought along side the Spartans at thermopylae a bit like making the Alamo and omitting all the Engish, Scots and Irish but then I guess you'd have to rename it 5000ish. Given its the Daily Mail I'm surprised they didn't praise the film for showing 'The Horrors' of illegal immigration. |

I don't care what anyone else says, I thought the film was great, an amazing showcase of cinematography, although a bit thin on the plotline.
I guess that makes me one of those violence loving, ignorant, simple minded movie goers right? If that's the case then I'd rather stay that way, because it means I can enjoy watching great action movies like this without having to make up a load of pedantic non-sense to make myself appear intelectually superior to the masses by opposing the general consensus about a film. I guess next time they should start films like this with the words "A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away..." and avoid a crap load of criticism from all those self proclaimed film critic/historians out there. ![]() |

I went to see it on Saturday, knowing previously that it's just 2 hours of blood and flying limbs, and i enjoyed the hell out of it! If you watch a film like this and actually take it seriously, then i feel very sorry for you.
This is a definite buy for me, hopefully in a HD format by the time it hits video release. It's one of those films that's great to stick on with a few mates and a few beers and just enjoy the action. [thumbup] |

That movie friggin' rocks. Saw it again last week. It's not intended to be historically accurate, rather it's an adaptation of a graphic novel (as the original poster said). To pick out it's historical inaccuracies would be missing the point. Even the co-writer director said that they took an actual event and turned it into mythology in order to get the essence of what a Spartan is, as opposed to the reality of it. It's more of a fantasy movie than a history movie. Frank Miller just wanted to emphasize the battle culture of the Spartans in a graphic way, not make a documentary...

Just as an aside on the armor, they probably would have worn full armor. Ancient poets go to great lengths in describing the glory of a particular soldier's armor and the stripping of valuable armor from dead soldiers. Was the armor truly as great as they describe? Did chosen men wear armor forged by Hephaestus? Probably not. Elite soldiers probably would have worn full bronze armor, though, including a cuirass, greaves, a helmet, an oxhide shield (with or without bronze), etc. Common soldiers might have worn leather armor or even worse.
As I understand it, most soldiers would have brought their own armor to war. It was often inherited, sometimes over several generations, and/or at some point possibly acquired by stripping it off someone you had killed. Spears were also inherited and a good spear would have been an object of tremendous value. They were up to 16 feet in length - imagine yourself carrying a 16-foot long ash pole with a bronze spearhead. |
