40 MB HDD and 7MB RAM

40/7=5.71 to 1 HDD to RAM
150/2=75 to 1 HDD to RAM

Why would you need 7 mb of ram with only a 40mb HD?

Wrong question.

How on earth did they get 7 megs of RAM?

That's actually a more valid question.

No!

I had a ZX81 which had a grand total of 1K memory built in, plus a 16K RAM pack add on.

ZX-81 ftw!

When you think about the way they could get a decent game of Galaxians out of 3.5k it makes you think about just how bloated everything has become.

8 megs with 1 dedicated to video? therefore 7 for ram?

My Amiga just started to fly when I installed that extra 512k of RAM. And you could enable/disable it too.

8MB RAM for 386 systems wasnt anything special though. We got our 8MB with with the PC when it upgraded it from 286SX. Heck, back then you could keep the same motherboard for like 5 years or so and still have the best CPU in your PC.

Not back in those days, 1MB for video would have been serious overkill.
