Default Riddle.
Heard this riddle today in class.

The two volumes of Gibbon's Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire stand side by side in order on a bookshelf. A bookworm commences at page one of volume one and bores its way in a straight line to the last pagof volume two. If each cover is 3mm thick and each book without the covers is 5.2cm thick, how far does the bookwormtravel? Answer

6mm because if you line up the two books together side by side, assuming volume 1 is on the left and volume 2 on the right. The bookworm would've commenced at page 1 of volume 1, boring it's way through the cover of volume one (so there's 3mm) then boring through the back cover of the 2nd volume (so there's another 3mm) thus arriving at the last page of volume 2.

The answer is 0cm because a bookworm isn't a creature, it's a person.

It does. Try putting two books next to each other, and see how far the first page of the one on the left to the last page of the one on the right is. 2 covers away.

Both answers are correct - conventionally it is 6mm but I order my books from the right to left on the shelf - don't know why, it's the way I've always done it - so the answer could also be 11cm.

There are no pages inbetween the first page of the first book and the last of the second. Just try it!

If volume one is on the left and volume two is on the right... then why would it bore through page 1 of volume one then suddenly end up at the end of vol 2?

surely it should read, if Vol 1 was on the RIGHT and Vol 2 was on the LEFT then it makes its way LEFT through both covers... and therefore 6mm.

Nope.

If you put two books side by side and you have the front cover of book one facing the end of book 2. Unless you have like a Chinese book.
