Default Bizzare find in amp....
Had a repair come in today with the customer complaining that his hifi amp was 'smelling a bit funny', got the engineers to look at it and found this,...

One crispy fried slug

Lol, not as bad as the grinded mouse I found in a servercase once.

The mouse got stuck in a 4000rpm metal bladed 120mm fan and the only reason I knew it was a mouse was because the tail was intact

I'll give you the smell though.

The server grinded to a halt from an overheating CPU in a matter of minutes, so there wasn't much small in there other then the typical overheating electronics one

I still havent worked that out, first of all why would you have a slug indoors? then how the hell did it fit through the small vent slots?

Damaged are you a hi-fi repair man? I ask because I bought a brand new Technics stereo system a couple of years ago and its always had a problem where if you have the volume over a certain amount the amp cuts out, the volume just knocks off but the amp is still turned on. I should have sent it back to where I bought it from but "I couldnt be arsed"

Ive been wanting to get it fixed for ages but there is no where around where I live (Chorley). Is this something you could sort out do you think?

Its a Technics SC-HD550.

Cheers mate.

I used to be but now i deal with returns to manufacturers, it sounds like your amp is cutting into protection, is the point it cuts out at about 12 o'clock on the dial? if so that tends to be fairly normal as most amps are running at peak output at that point.

If its lower than that i would take a look at you speaker connections as a loose cable can trip a protection circuit.

I cant remember the exact volume but its something like -34db or higher.
Ive checked all the speaker connections and they seem fine, also the colling fan at the back is working fine, and facing the correct way [no]

Without seeing it its really hard to say, its sounds like the protection circuit but it could be cutting in for any number of reasons, best bet is try and find a local tech who can have a look and see whats going on .

Sorry bud

Edit: If you can try and find a panasonic dealer as they are the same company as technics (matsushita corp) and will be able to get spares easily if needed
