Default CNN just kills the Zune
http://www.cnn.com/video/player/play...&wm=native_mac

I'm not MS bashing but I have to say, MS needs to do something new, not try to take the market of something already around. Example, if the Zune was released right now with 10 to 30Gigs, video playback, FM radio, and WiFi and was ALSO a cell phone then MS might have really had a sweet spot to get into. However, they would still need to get some "decent design people" as the video puts it

Well blow me, M$ has copied Apple again. Hope it flops, may teach the under handed bastards a lesson!

Overall its a poor mans iPod, even the older iPods looks better than that. With the new touch sensitive iPod coming soon and a phone (rumours) who would have guessed M$ wanted in on the lucrative Apple dominated market. Shame they can never be original and at least try an make their own mark in the market

Ya, I know people might be fast to say that Apple was not the first on the market with an mp3 player; I don’t even think they were first with a hard drive based mp3 player. However, the iPod was different enough and looked different enough to be considered a new type of product. It was priced extremely high and was first only for Macs yet it still held enough of it’s own to move out to PC and sell pretty well. Microsoft has been one step behind everyone for awhile now; it seems that every time Google releases a new something or another Microsoft will push their version out the door six months later. I really believe if they were able to design a sharp looking cell phone in some nice colors like a sharp black (now this flat brown/black of the Zune) and brilliant white that looked like a normal cell phone but was able to handle 10Gigs of music and produce good sound quality and like 10 hours of music playback that they would sell great.

Everyone is waiting for an iPhone from Apple, partly because Apple does well with design and everyone can’t wait to see what it looks like but also partly because the phones on the market now suck for playing music, they can’t hold a lot and don’t have any nice software that someone would begin to use every day even if they weren’t going to sync their phone. Microsoft could have beat Apple to this, I’m sure with their size they could also have landed the phone in Verizon, Sprint, Cingular, and T-Mobile stores which would let them pretty much nail the whole mobile market. Tie in their music store on the phone and on the computer and let people “SMS” each other songs (that they can play for 5 times or some crazy limit) and I really think it would have gone gold.

Now some of that might not be technically possible right now, but Apple’s phone is still in the works and I doubt MS had to push something out the door right now to get holiday sales or something. I’m sure they have enough intelligence to pick up on a release from Apple that they could hit market at least at the same time if not maybe a month or two early. Then they would have a good fight and could have the power play position but undercutting the price a bit. Take one step ahead rather then remain one step behind.

It's really nice as design and idea. Propably nice product aswell.
I'm not really into these iPod's either, but Zune is kinda one generation behind, imo.

That is a very poorly done segment. What does the Ipod shuffle have anything to do with the Zune? Why didn't they mention that Ipods have limitations on their music too? Seems very slanted.

well, the Zune at least got 1 fanboy here [rofl]

I think everyone at Apple was laughing when they start pimping the Shuffle.

"Why can't they get some decent design people?"

that was my biggest laugh the whole week

Get a Nokia N91. Does everything they say Zune can't, does everything Zune and iPod can, sounds great and it's a phone too.

I am not a fanboy and I don't understand why you keep spamming Zune threads calling everyone fanboys, I don't own a Zune or an Ipod and never have or will untill they make a decent small capacity player. I'm just saying that they did not convey the correct information or strive for objectivity in their segment.

I only had to call one person fanboy so far [rolleyes]

You forget they are pointing out EXACTLY what matters to the average joe BECAUSE they are exactly those average joes. If they started some major tech talk that would have been wrong.

They pointed out all of the negative issues of the player and didn't talk about any of the advantages of the player except for the radio. That is not objective reporting.

they talked about the wifi

the brutal truth is, the player doesn't have a real advantage over the competitors

the biggest competitor is right now the Sandisk player because it fullfills the need of the average joe without needing an itunes

The Wifi is a stupid idea. Hey let me drain my battery by sending you a few songs you can listen to for only 3 days.

Three times, not three days... also, what limits on music do iPods have? I haven't really run into any with my new 5.5G so far.

Creative would be the first company with a hdd based mp3 player... also the inventer of much of the technology in general used in mp3 players. There is a reason why apple has to pay them a $100million.

You want a quality player, from an inovative company, with no limitations on the music. go with creative. nuff said

heard/experienced are two different things. I've never had a problem with my Muvo 2 and I've had 2 of them. They were about 2/3 the size of it's main competitor, the Ipod Mini.

Or not . Try a player from Cowon. I've had my X5 for almost a year now and still happy with it. Not only does it support tons of music formats, including FLAC, it also plays video, radio, voice recording, radio recording, line-in recording, can be used as USB mass storage, and is rugged as hell. I've dropped it 3 times now from chest height. There is also custom firmware out there for their players that allow you to do all sorts of other things as well.

If you actually look at the patent, it is pretty obvious that it was one of those BS ones. Creative did basically start the MP3 industry, but then they sat on it and didn't bother developing their MP3 players much (like they do in most other markets they go into e.g. sound cards). So it is no surprise that Apple was able to take the market by storm when the best Creative had was this:
