Default Is HD Radio worth it?
I keep hearing them advertise it on the radio here and I wonder does anyone know anything about it or have any first (or second) hand experience with it?

Not sure if it's the same thing, but my Bro is living in LA and he's got this digital radio thing that's really good. Looks a little bit bigger than an MP3 player and is hardwired into his car.

He get's stupid amounts of radio stations and IIRC no adverts as it\s a monthly subscription, but the thing he likes the best is that the scores to all the footy games (no not talking american footy) on the screen. No waiting for ages for someone to mention the score, it's there on the dash.

You're brother has satellite radio, which like you said, requires a monthly fee, HD radio on the otherhand, does not.

yeah, i've heard ads for high def radio. I'd llike to know the lowdown on exactly what it is. It seemed to me, it;s just a marketing gimmick (hi-def) for some new digital radio format.

From my understanding it's just a digital broadcast or some fancy jazz. I would guess its like 128kbits or maybe even 96kbits or something but compared to FM that's "High Def" which is why they call it HD Radio. I was out in LA for a few days and every commercial break I kept hearing HD being promoted, if you live in a big city I would guess its worth while since it's a free broadcast but I doubt it's much better then normal radio, except for maybe a slight audio quality increase.

I don't know exactly how they do, but the bitrate/quality is supposed to rival/and or slightly exceed CD quality over the air.

Ya, but that whole "CD Quality" phrase has been tossed around way too much. I'm pretty sure I remember XM saying they had CD Quality radio and iTunes and everyone else saying CD Quality or "near CD Quality" and most the time it turns out that bit rates are around 128kbits give or take a step or two, in XM's case I think spoken word programs are actually more like 64kbits or so.

I thought there was a conspiracy to keep radio low quality to stop copying.

Oh it is around, it's just the next standard and so far is limited to big city areas.
