Default wtf.. 4.5GB compressed to 23MB?
uhm..I don't know how I did it, but I was planning to burn as backup file an mdf file, but as it was 4.5 GB big, I decided to compress it with winrar w/ Best Compression option and split to 500 MB volumes.
after couple of minutes I check back expecting to find 6-8 rar files and instead I find a 23 MB rar.

Is this thing safe?
and how did it pack that small, is it because I have 7zip installed aswell?

You sure you didn't interrupt it before it was done? There's no frigging way. That's like a 200-fold compression.

nope no interruption.
I even tried extracting the mdf file from rar and it worked.

wouldn't be surprised though if there will be errors in the future though [rofl]

Why don't you try mounting the image and see if it works ...

If its a lot of blank space, say a blank HDD image for virtualPC or something, it can easily be compressed that much.

I've seen databases compress down by 90%+ and as the guys above said, its probably mostly empty so its possible

Maybe you've crated an miniimage? A Minimage zipped can be very small, but unzipped, about the size of a regular cd/dvd. (Blank space)

And you CAN compress 6gb into a few kilobytes, it would just take weeks, even months on a fast computer.

You can get mini images. I use one to play C&C first decade so my original don't get broke. I think 4.4mb compressed, but when i extract it it's the entire size of the disk which is around 8.4GB i think.
