Default Comedy roasts....
...I don't get them. It's basically just standard behaviour among English people in the pub. I'm led to believe it's mainly an American thing, which I find even more confusing. Apart from on here (and that tends to just be a general sense of humour failure), all of the Americans I know are the same. What am I missing?

When I think of a roast, I think of Comedy Central getting a few dozen z list celebrities together to make stupid scripted jokes about one of their own.

I thought this thread was going to be about food. I'm still not sure exactly what it's about.

Imagine if there was a way of globally searching for information. Hang on! There is!!

They are the only ones I have seen, but they apparently get high ratings over there? I may have duff information?

Making fun of eachother is a bloke thing. I imagine that works pretty similar, worldwide.
Turning it into a television show and dumbing it down however, is an American thing.

Close enough, right?

Well, sometimes it works. It definitely doesn't work on here. Far too many superiority complexes floating around.

It's just the lowest common denominator in humour.

Sounds like someone has never been in a group of mates that make fun of each other. Some of the best humour I have ever heard has come from banter in the pub. You need a sharp wit and a thick skin to keep up though.

Of course it's completely fine with a group of friends, it's almost constantly like that in my circle of friends. Everyone picks on each other.

It's this organized celeb/comedian roasts which I find unfunny and cheap.

Thing is that, that's how they actually originated, groups of celebrities and comedians would revel in roasting and picking each other at private parties decades ago, then comedy central started televising celebrity roasts.
