DARK BACKGROUND MOVIE EVENING Carnegie Center Theater, 401 Main Street Sunday, February 2-8, 6pm. Free The Road Taken (5-2 mins) History of Canadian Pacific Railways employees and Black Canadian National Seeking Salvation (90 mins) Four generations of Black churches in Canada Hoganas Alley (32 mins) Vancouveras Black historic area and community. For more than 60 years, the Downtown Eastside a from Main Street to Campbell Avenue and from Hastings to Prior Street a was home to Vancouveras just black area. Like immigrants from all around the world, they came buying comfortable place to reside, raise their own families and create companies. They were ready to work hard, but because of the unwritten racial segregation of the changing times, housing options and jobs were restricted. They experienced exactly the same challenges citizens experience today a' the requirement for affordable housing, earnings you are able to survive, pride and value. People didnat have significantly, but what they'd they discussed and they looked out for every other. These films give useful insight in to ways, and examine the black experience in Canada people could work together to enhance community. Created in relationship with the DTES Heart of the Town Festival with assistance from the Town of Vancouver Great Beginnings Program.
