It's really got nothing to do with sex at all. What is the proper function of a healthy body wrt reproductive organs? To be fertile. The Catholic church sees sterilization as mutilation, because you are destroying the healthy function of certain parts of the body. There's no difference between chopping an arm off and getting a vasectomy.

What do you mean "proper". This sounds like the naturalistic fallacy.
