What I love about these threads is that you normally get a good 95% of people admitting to have got into fights claiming to have won them.
Many as a Pre-teen. How can a boy NOT fight sometimes as a preteen?
Yeah, it's very difficult to word the question in such a way that people don't push their answers one way or another. I tried my best. Since this forum is fairly free of women, there fortunately are no "chicks to impress" by boasting which should lower the "how am I expected to reply"-bias.

The thing I'm really interested isn't really who "won" the fight, not at all. How common is this stuff, that's one of the things I'm interested in.
Well, I think these comments ****ed up the poll. Votes were 3-5 before my last post, now they're 10-5.

Look, ignore what you're "presumed" to reply in this poll one way or another. Ignore what others might think of you and be honest with yourself.

That or it's a small sample size and very much prone to large shifts.
of course, scientifically speaking you are absolutely right. only 8 votes in a yes/no question means things can and often will shift a lot.

I didn't even realize there was a poll.

VJ, you can get your ass kicked and still hit back.

ACK!

obvious
It's 12 to 5 that people hit back, whether or not they are exaggerating their fighting prowess is irrelevant.

BK's stories could actually have ended in him getting destroyed, but there is no reason to doubt he hit back.

ACK!

Why would someone lie Well, d'uh. For no reason, you guys are being absolutely right here. It was a dumb subject derail, just ignore it.

Was the intention to cover all childhood "Childhood" is an excellent term here.

The only problem with it is the pre-teen specification. Teenager: 13-19. Pre-teenager: Under 13. Twelve, thirteen, fourteen, etc.

VJ, that's the 'bullying building character' mantra that almost always gets derided but has some basis.

We as males are supposed to be driven to compete and that includes fighting others, defending our turf, etc. The development of the male psyche is stunted if he doesn't experience these primal things.

But it goes beyond primitive man. The fruits of competition are vast, as any capitalist will tell you, and if you never learn to compete, you will struggle in our civilization. The forging grounds for intellectual or leadership competition are on the childhood playgrounds.

As far as I can tell, the only thing you got from all those fights as a kid is an irrational desire to join the marines.

That's the thing. You're supposed to. I never learned. It's really hard to push myself to do it in real life. Of course it's easy if you tell yourself to do it, but there are some situations in life where you have to follow your instincts.

The point is... I think boys who never learn to push back when they're kids grow up to become a little weird. And I think it has subtle, hidden effects on how they will see things when they're adults. And I've been a little angry at myself lately for not realizing this as a kid -- it's so obvious.

This is what I mean. How can you NOT fight a little bit if someone pushes you around?
Well, I never liked to punch in the face, I did it, but I preferred punching in the gut. Turns out that is what you should do in boxing.

ACK!
