Default AAPL now worth $600bn
Apple's stock is at a all time high right now, $603bn and climbing. News is rife that they've struck a deal with some major networks to create a set top box that does live TV and DVR as well as integrating PPV (iTunes) and streaming. Could be really really big.

Could be really, really big.

They will never make money on such a device. You need a 3,000 core i700000 to run iTunes without lag.

Or an iPhone.

AppleTV right now, is completely inferior to any of its competitors. It is unnecessarily restricted.

If they can remove their head from their ass long enough to open up this set top box a bit, people may come in drones.

Restricted how? Like you can't install Linux on it and use it to download torrents or watch Xtube?

I use it to watch Hulu, Netflix, anything purchased on iTunes, anything on YouTube, Ted Talks, anything I ripped from my DVD collection to h.264 and pretty much anything on my iPad screen.

You need a PC running first of all and everything is pigeon holed through that epic **** of a ****, iTunes.

I stuck a $30 HDMI capable video card in a 10 year old dell and watch everything that way.

I think it could be a good device if it wasn't, as Will said, inferior. Also, anything involving iTunes is epic fail. Apple needs to step back from iTunes and realize that some people just don't want to deal with that piece of junk.

I would describe Apple as a self centered company because they love having everything proprietary. I think that's part of their downfall. To make something truly outstanding it needs to not be so Apple-centric, but if they don't make it that way then it's not really an Apple product.

It's a content consumption device, what do you expect? Roku, Boxee box and others are for those that already have thousands of gigabytes of entertainment ready for viewing. The general consumer is an Apple TV, not a media player with a huge HDD. Also, you can Jailbreak an Apple TV to let you do just about anything.

What advantage does AppleTV have over this?

The interface is more polished on the Apple TV. Other than that? Nothing. But most people won't care, which is why the AppleTV is pretty damn solid for most people.

You have to run a PC... with iTunes.

There is no Netflix, no hulu, no third parties. Just iTunes.

The interface on the WD is perfect for what it does. It can connect to local drives, network drives, and third party streaming services.

Think about it, think (for yourself) about it.

EDIT: most of the above is wrong. Talking out of my ass again.

Apple's greatest skill is making complex devices easy to use for anyone from 4 to 100 years old. This is a tech forum, and it doesn't apply to users here. Imagine giving the WD and the Apple TV to your 75 year old neighbour and which one they would be likely to adopt.

Sure, Apple have great marketing but ease of use for the masses is their real appeal.

I'm confused as to what you are saying. Netflix and Hulu are both on AppleTV.

I will agree completely once they remove the dependence of iTunes running on a computer.

As someone who owns one of those I assume that the major difference is that the AppleTV actually works / always sees your network / doesn't crash.

Ok, I could swear that I "knew" this a year or two ago.

Let me shut up and research this again for the first time.

Good edit.

You don't need a PC, you get Netflix, Hulu, YT, MLB etc.
