Default Hurricane Irene? No, Steam is a disaster.
As everyone outside of Valve knows, there was a hurricane on the east coast this week-end.

Here is my story.

As the storm hit, my Internet connection was taken out but I still had power. I figured that the best way to live through a hurricane than Arrogant ******* Ale and tons of PC games, here is the beer:

After putting a few back, I launch Steam:

I waited until I saw this:

I clicked "Start In Offline Mode" and saw this:

I hit OK and Steam closes entirely.

I tried again, this time trying to cancel the Update nothing. I tried Retry Connection: nothing. I even tried putting donuts into the ROM drive to bribe it a bit figuring that Gabe put a couple of Easter eggs in the software, but it appears that he ate those all too.

Long story short: I own almost 100 games on Steam, meaning Valve has thousands of dollars of my money, but I could not play games that I have legitimately purchased because Steam needed to update.

What a ****ing piece of ****.

So you live in the sticks and lost power during a tiny ass storm you yourself dismissed by saying, and I quote: "White people are going crazy over this." ... So let's blame Steam!

You, sir, are not worthy of Arrogant ******* Ale.

Power was up, Internet was down. Maybe this will help.

If you'd been sober, you'd have remembered that offline mode has be to be selected before you go offline. It's a pre emptive setting for taking your machine to LAN parties or knowing you'll lose connection for a few hours.

Or maybe you never used Steam in the 56k days, you don't look that old.

This pretty much eliminates me from most things that I have done. ...you'd have remembered that offline mode has be to be selected before you go offline. So, it is my ISP's fault for dumping my connection? Or is it really, really bad design that I can not play games that are on my local drive because a PoS UI needs to update (for the 30th time this week)?

Did you attempt to go to the games directory and run the executable?

Just tried with Borderlands and BC2, works fine!

(because your steam client is running)

And yes I did: Portal 2 actually launched and then said, "No Steam" and allowed me to quit.

Duh. Portal 2 is a steamworks game, it needs the interface to run.

Isn't BC2 a Steamworks game?

EDIT: No, it is not.... hmmm. I really thought it was.

I wasn't aware Connecticut had discovered wires.

Yeah, it was right after the publication of the most recent book you have ever read.

As it just so happens, the number of novels I have read that were published last year alone exceed the total number you have ever attempted to read before abandoning halfway through.

If Steam doesn't run and double-clicking the .exe works, does this mean those games do not have any form of DRM?
