...which, for a touch-screen device, could prove to become a real problem.

sorry I had to
I see what you did there. I was tempted by this pun too...

Actually:

It is not. There are plenty of polished android tablets out there, the Nexus 7 is just incredibly cheap. Also, I hope that you're not saying that I'm biased towards Apple products
I still don't see anyone else mentioning miracle tablets, just you being dismissive.

The Nexus can compete on price and that's what the comment was probably about. It's not an iPad thankfully, but the specs are still very good and can do most things the iPad can and some things it can't simply because it's not using iOS, this for less than half the price sounds pretty good too me.

Not everyone wants an iPad, I certainly don't.

Considering that I am writing this from my tegra3 based android tablet, I can assure you, I know what the nexus is and isn't capable of. With that said, it seriously lacks in some departments compared to other android tablets, and price aside, it really isn't groundbreaking at all... It is a solid little tablet at an awesome price though.

It's not missing that much, just the obvious features like sdcard, hdmi out, and rear camera.

Have you tried buying tablets for £150 before? the experience is not great, there are allot of dodgy Android tablets out there. Having one from Google at least guaranties a certain level of quality.

I had a Transformer Prime briefly, sold it because it was just collecting dust.

Guys, the reason certain tablets have certain features is because market research tells the companies that their customers would like them.

I appreciate most people on here think like techies, but if you thought more pragmatically you would realise that a tablet isn't necessarily better or worse due to a single feature (or three).

That doesn't mean that there aren't any crap products out there. Some projects just shouldn't have been started in the first place.

Another department it is lacking in is quality control. There are issues with bad grounds on the headphone jack and separating screens. One person in this very thread was struck by the screen issue.

No I haven't. I bought one for about double that - because the lack of an SDCard and the HDMI out was a deal breaker for me. 8GB on a tablet really isn't a lot.

What do you use them for? I'm genuinely interested as I've never had a need and can't see a need but there are obviously a lot of people who don't feel the same out there.

SDCard: To get more space on the tablet for media / movies / games etc. Especially games have really increased in size compared to what we're used to from mobile devices.

HDMI: I was planning on getting the tablet since I'll be spending a lot of time abroad, being able to hook the tablet up to any modern TV (at hotels for example) allows me to watch the movies / streams whatever I'm in the mood for on the big screen.

I know for me, while I don't use the TF Prime but the iPad when I travel, I like having 64GB of storage for music, shows, and movies. I also have a few games that are over 1GB a pop so that eats up a lot of space.

In addition, I will connect my iPad to hotel TVs via HDMI to watch Netflix and other media.

There is also the 16GB version for £199, it's not much extra for the price but given the paper thin margins you can't really blame them.

Sort of, I just refuse to use iOS and itunes. Other than some questionable design choices and overpricing Apple products can be very good.

You did ask whether I tried shopping for tablets for £150 before... Oh and no, 16 GB really isn't much still.

For allot of people 8GB is enough, for you or me this wouldn't be acceptable but I know allot of people with Android devices with empty sdcard slots.

Games for Android can easily be between 1-2GB each so even 16GB of storage can disappear very quickly, having all your music and video on an sdcard means you can install more apps.

Also if you root you can use an sdcard as internal storage for application data, why this requires root I don't know.

It's all good trying to push cloud services, but WIFI-only tablets need expandability. It's not like it actually adds much cost to the device, either. In fact, it would probably be cheaper by just offering one SKU rather than 2 or 3 different versions. But then, they can't charge ridiculous amounts for 8/16/32GB "upgrade".

Wouldn't it be the same problem if it was a Tablet with 3G though?

Nope because you just get a PAYG SIM for data only.

Most tablets are PAYG and you also get much better battery life using 3G on a tablet and don't murder your phone's battery tethering.
