Might affect battery life quite a bit. What do you think the impedance of a short across the chassis would be?
well there shouldn't be any. its not common practice to ground to negative electrical components on the chassis in notebooks to my knowledge, otherwise you'd be getting little "static shocks" every time you touched it.

also the wifi antennae, doesn't have an electrical current per say it captures radio signals that are then converted into electrical signals by the receiver.

perhaps matey should try a different card, it may be the Rx amplifiers being at fault.

There is a reason for a common plane for return paths in all circuits, a chassis is a good choice for accessibility and also size. It will not, however, eliminate "static shocks" every time you touch it. Those come from a voltage differential. If you are grounded and the chassis is not, there is a chance that the average charge of the chassis is different than the average charge of you (ground), if it is different enough, there go your shocks. This can happen whether or not the chassis is used as a common reference throughout the circuit.

Charge is quantitative and cannot be destroyed.

also the wifi antennae, doesn't have an electrical current per say it captures radio signals that are then converted into electrical signals by the receiver. Hmmm...

An electric signal travels through all medium as a wave (LOL double slot), moving charge through a conductor emits radio waves, including wires. An antenna is a load particularly designed to convert alternating currents into radio frequency.

Since all energy must be conserved, the energy inside of the radio wave must be absorbed somewhere. With wireless communications, the ideal case is for a majority of the absorption occurring entirely at the intended receiver.

Let's use a simple Wifi network (access point and laptop) in an infinitely empty space as an example:

The access point propagates a radio wave. Since the space is infinitely empty, none of the energy of the wave can be absorbed by anything except the laptop.

By design, the antenna will be the path of least resistance. The radio wave will couple to the antenna and transfer energy (in the form of an electric current) to the antenna circuit where the signal is sampled and demodulated. Communication!

The amount of current through the antenna is directly proportional to the energy of the radiation.

I am not sure where there is room in this process for electric signals without current to exist... perhaps this is not what you meant? perhaps matey should try a different card, it may be the Rx amplifiers being at fault. Then why suggest using a choke to remedy it? A choke will increase the impedance of the circuit, the last thing that a blown amp wants is more load to drive.

The reason a choke would be applied is for noise immunity, you really could not determine there was an issue with SNR unless you had information regarding dis-connectivity, dropped packets, poor performance, etc.

It's so simple, you don't even need to know Maxwell's equations, right?

OHP, look up 'ground loops' - IIRC the term correctly and then look up, again IIRC, Thevenin and Norton circuit analysis - Will, if I have them wrong, please correct me.

Also seems that we have a new troll to take over from EaG

I thought there was always 2 at least anyway with EaG.

Will reminds me of one of them old Professors in school, uses long words, baffles you with science and explains theories and other things in such a way that most people probably have to google half his post to make any sense out of it.

My father once told me that if I ever had to explain something to a large audience that the best way to go about it so that everyone unfamiliar with the topic in question understands what I'm talking about was to remember the word "KISS", which in the case of Will and his explanations, is KEEP IT SIMPLE STUPID.

Not everyone left school a decade ago or has a degree in astro physics or whatever else, Most people understand basic electrical theories and have a good grasp on science in general and some of the older members of this forum probably look at Will's average scientific posts and think "WTF", and then start googling some terms etc.

I'm always reminded of this image when he replies to my posts too.....

Through careful design and test, I would guess. In a device as large as a laptop, it's not an insurmountable problem.

I have no doubt that both of these computers have their antennas in the same type of plastic hinge section where the lid and base are joined. Dell might employ slightly different hinge geometry that interferes with reception or maybe they use slightly different materials. Who knows.
http://www.appleinsider.com/articles...ive_frame.html

I wasn't expecting that. I thought it would be in the black plastic strip on the hinge.

IIRC?? Don't even pretend you didn't look them up first and are now trying to pass it off as part of your existing knowledge-base

It's fair enough to call him on talking BS, but not just because you don't understand what he says. I understand most of what he says, but other people are much more intelligent than me and I don't get what they say at all. It would be worth remembering that.

There is no getting around the fact that I'm basically saying you're not clever enough to understand what he says, but I'm not being rude as I'm in the same position with a lot of people.

That is actually kind of sad because I am changing careers to a college professor. Most people tell me I would be good at it.

Maybe it is the "college" part that you have issue with. Maybe your father really wanted you to "keep it stupid, stupid" and to date ugly women. Maybe your father is really ashamed of you, I would be.

I'm sure you think earl grey makes you seem intellectual, but over here it's just drunk by pompous dickheads.

I'm sure you drink some generic non-loose **** in a bag from your local Tesco.

Unlike you, I take my tea seriously, obtaining it from McNulty's Tea and Coffee.

If you took your tea seriously you wouldn't drink earl grey.

I don't take my tea seriously, I have twinings breakfast tea.

Twinings breakfast tea is the most foul-tasting crap. Little wonder it's the most popular tea over here.

I'm not getting into this argument as the likelihood is its a completely different taste to the UK one.

It's made by the same company and imported to the US. It's identical.

If I could be bothered I could give you a long list of identical products that taste different around the world. In this case they might be, but I'm not counting on that until I have tasted both.

A lot of Americans don't put milk in tea, breakfast tea needs it to taste right.

Could be one of those "Designed in London, refined in Beijing" products, you never know...

I use Twinings when I need a clean piss sample, by the way.

Actually I do understand most of his replies, but he does tend to over complicate his posts, when I'm sure he could explain it in simpler terms and still get the point across and still keep to the correct scientific terms, it just seems that most of his posts come across as a "cut and paste" from some science website.

That is actually kind of sad because I am changing careers to a college professor. Most people tell me I would be good at it.

Actually I'm pretty well educated, considering I didn't know what I wanted to do "in life" until I hit 30.

I've got a few NVQ's and C & G's to my name in Electrical engineering and electronic servicing and incidentally I'm going back to College in Sept to do a BTEC and then go on to do a degree or diploma after that.

As for my "ugly" girlfriends, well that's a matter of personal opinion, most of my ex's, barring my ex-wife have lacked some redeeming features, but I tend to go for personality first and beauty second, as the second one fades far quicker with age, and the first one is usually the only thing they have left.

I'm happy with my choices and unlike you, I guess I've never had to pay for sex at least.
