We arrived in the airport late yesterday evening after a many fun ~ 17 hours of travelling from UK. Obviously pretty tired. Our hotel was apparently really close and there was meant to be a shuttle to take us. This was none existent after standing around and twiddling our thumbs the cab drivers were refusing to drive us since it was so close ...? ( WTF do these guys not have a minimum fare, I can get a taxi down the street in most places )

So we walked, quickly discovering the lack of a pavement (side-walk) so had to navigate over fences and roads. It wasn't *that* close though but easily walk able in 10 mins. Seems odd to have no way of easily walking .
Certainly is warm here, late evening was a pleasant temperature.

Oklahoma City has the stockyards that are actually worth a visit. Definitely something you wouldn't see here every day (except if like me you work on a trading floor, then it's about comparable).

We drove through Oklahoma when we did our Route 66 trip. There are some funky ghost towns with historical remains... Hydro for example.

Ah, the good old American taxi driver. Don't be soft with them. Tell them you're ****ing lost and you want a ****ing lift, regardless of the distance.

Ignore this.

If you tell a NYC cab driver that you are lost, a five minute ride would become a five-borough tour.

Have you recently been involved in a serious accident? Your ability to meter sarcasm and flippancy appears to have ****ed right off.

Nicely discerned.

@boxrick - try Red Lobster, IHOP and Applebee's to say you have been.

Applebee's is a neighbourhood bar that's in loads of cities, International House Of Pancakes is like little chef on steroids (the omelettes are great) and Red Lobster is a seafood chain restaurant.

And I thought that I was the one on drugs.

All three of those chains are awful, but I guess anything is a big upgrade from the UK.

IHOP, really?

Ouch, I feel for you. I tore my ACL during a lacrosse game a few years back. You tear any ligaments?

Seafood cooked this far inland cannot be good.... I imagine the chefs don't have enough experience of it.

I am amazed by the amount of fast food places, that is all there is around here. Bottled tap water is common here... getting spring water is pretty difficult. Managed to get a out a bottle of Evian and some bananas from the corners of the Walmart!

People over here are lovely not sure I would want to live in OK it is too sparse.

Will UK is great! You clearly haven't been or been to the right places!

Think if I ever come to the US on a trip, I will stay here for about a month. Rent a car and go traveling around the states. ( Automatic cars suck though )

Exactly how high are you? I said he should go to say he has been, not because they are great. Do you have any better suggestions for him? IHOP Omelettes are great though.

If you go for a month you should fly around a few states. Vegas would be a must do as well.

DO NOT GO TO IHOP OR RED LOBSTER (APPLEBEE'S IS A 50/50 chance of sick)

If you want good food, find a small chain specializing in that food. You will get infinitely better taste and value.

I'm not sure if OK has a Houston's. If they do, they have God send burgers.

I assure you, that if you took a month long road trip through the US with our wide, straight roads... you would not think an auto sucks. Almost every city is set up in a grid, and when you are stuck in traffic, an auto is your friend. For a road trip you would love an automatic. For a weekend drive up the 101 along california's coast, then you would want a stick.

Applebee's Fine place to get a cheap drink going (lots of $1 drinks) and their spinach alfredo dip is good, but i'd stick to the appetizers.

As to IHOP/Denny's, bad, slow service with below average food, but DM is right, their omelets are an oasis on that menu. But hey, if it is 1:30 am, and you are hungry... there are not many other sit down choices. As to seafood, the cooking is not what would worry me. Putting something in a boiler, steamer or fryer for 12 minutes isn't rocket science. It would be more the freshness of their product. Live lobster is just fine at a Red Lobster, and their dinner rolls are flaky, buttery goodness. Pappadeaux would be a slight step up if there are any around.

If I were you I'd ask around and find where a good country or soul food place was. They should be in abundance, locally owned, and full of flavors you don't often find in the UK.

Get you a nice plate of Chicken Fried Steak, with fried okra, collard greens and mash potatoes with country gravy and peach cobbler for desert. That is an oklahoma dinner. And quite tasty and filling. Wait until you see the steak. Most cover the entire dinner plate with the sides in separate bowls.

And don't forget to tip anywhere you sit down and are waited on or at bars. You will see tip jars other places, but unless you sit down and are waited on (restaurant wise) no one expects a tip. Waiters/bartenders/servers only make $2 an hour, so they notice if you don't.

Chains that will be around that are good: Whataburger: Easily the best fast food hamburger. Dairy Queen or Braums: good place to get a bananna split, milkshake, malt. Texas Land and Cattle: Good steaks. Hooters: Good wings and plenty of 19 yr old ***** tits and asses on display. Speaking of tits, you should definitely go to a titty bar. If nothing else, just for the horror

The thing to remember about chains is that each will usually be individually owned, and so some may be festering pits of pestulence but others may be supreme examples of their kind - depends on the owner and staff.

Personally, I'd be looking for somewhere I could fire off a range of firearms as well, less concerned about the food side.
