Considered a bicycle - it won't do 75 mph (unless you're VERY strong and fit) but will go most places you walk with a fair bit more speed and a lot less time.

GS500 is cheap, reliable and good. There are 8203948209340 GS500's out there so parts are cheap too. Maintenance is easy to do yourself. It's a pretty allround bike.. you can just it to go to work but you can still have fun with it and it handles pretty well too

So then it wasn't you who stole my old bike.

Yamaha YZF 750R, in mint condition, bought for €1100. Never even got to race it on the track.

How about a basic commuter bike like a CB250 if low milege and looked after you should have problems.
The best bike i had was a CG125 never spent any money on it and had it for years and it nearly could hit 70mph, and if youve never riden a bike before it will feel fast getting there.

Please, do NOT buy a brand new bike for your first bike... A couple reasons:
1) Being your first bike, the likelyhood you'll drop it at some point, whether it's moving or not is much higher. You won't feel as bad if this happens if it was a used bike.

2) You can get MUCH better bikes used for the amount you're willing to spend than a new bike OR pay much less for the same bike that's a few years old.

My first bike was a 1996 Bandit 600 I got for $2200. I got a "new" bike about 3 weeks ago for $3200 (2002 Honda 919 CB900F).

The suggestion of a Suzuki GS500 is a very good one... You *could* get a 250 bike, but the vast majority of people will not be satisfied with it for very long and wish they had something a little more powerful.

You should be able to find a relatively recent GS500 (2004 or newer) GS500 for well under you're target of $4,300. Probably anywhere from $1500-2200 or so. A used SV650 would also be a good choice for a first bike.

So then it wasn't you who stole my old bike.

Wow, I didn't realize it was stolen, thought you just upgraded. That sucks. Get insurance money for it?

I guess it really depends how much you need one and how much money you have for one. A 10+ mile walk is pretty damn long. Also, if you'll need transportation in winter/cold weather or if you just live in a warm weather area. I have seen some people here ride bikes in the winter... I think they're crazy, but some do (Winter here it regularly gets into the 20's, and sometimes below). I can image if you're only going ~5 miles and not much over 40mph in the winter, with the right clothing it wouldn't be bad as long as the roads are safe (no snow/ice).

Good point about the weather aspect - I'd suggest a (full?) fairing as a desirable feature - some also add offroad 'brush guards' to their road bikes to stop the wind chill on the fingers.

Tinak, I assume the reliability and fuel economy are much more important to you than performance?
