Default 4G...WTF?
I have 10MB DSL at home. It's the fastest access you can get out here in BFE. Friend tethered his phone to my PC. I'm downloading at 5.5 MegaBYTES per second. ... ... Screw landlines.

Yeah, 4G tethering is great if:

a) You can plug your phone into the wall
b) You have a stable signal
c) You have unlimited data
d) Your carrier doesn't charge you for the privilege to tether
e) You have 4G LTE

Which basically means you don't have T-mobile. /rant

My friend with Verizon does this for us when we need to DL a Steam game for a LAN, it's 10x faster than the land line connection.

That's basically what we were doing lol. If verizon offered unlimited mobile broadband plans I'd consider dropping my current ISP. My friend is on an unlimited plan and verizon doesn't seem to have an issue with his 40gb a month usage.

A few weeks ago I was having some issues with Comcast, they overcharged me for some things, and I refused to pay the bill. They disconnected my internet, and I tethered to HSPA+ phone on AT&T for a few days, it wasn't too bad. I have a 5GB cap, and I used 3GB in a few days. The Comcast issue was resolved btw, they were wrong.

Damn,

You guys are making me dislike my 4g service. I have Epic 4G from sprint which uses the Clear network and at my office, I only get 5Mb/s (home is 1.5-2Mb/s).

After seeing what you guys are getting. I think my next phone is going to be a 4g LTE phone.

I know what you mean, that's about what I get if I'm lucky. The fastest I've ever seen on T-mobile's HSPA+ network is 15/5, and that was in the drive-thru of an El Pollo Loco.

I have the HTC Evo 4G. I've only ever used 4G once when I was at a layover in Atlanta, GA. I was pulling 3mbits max.

Not only is Verizon's service ludicrously fast, but they're the only ones in my area to even offer 3g. Sprint, AT&T, T-Mobile, etc. are ALL stuck at 1x speed around here.

I hate their pricing, but I can't deny that they have by far the best network.

It's not just the caps, it's the latency. Sure, streaming and browsing might be fine, but you'll struggle if you're playing CoD or Halo 4...

Is the latency high because the upstream is variable? I figured if you are getting a pretty decent upsteam a low ping would follow suit.

Think about the hops.

PC, to wifi to cell to cell tower to backbone. You're going to get variability in that continuously - from what I can tell, pings on 4g are usually 30 - 70 msecs... my wifi is usually 22 - 30 msecs and when on wired, I can get 15 - 20 msecs.

Maybe some people can test and report back.

Sitting on the beach with 70 ping playing a PC game doesn't sound too bad to me.

Max brightness to counter the glare... meh.

I did read that the new iPad can supply 25 hours of 4g connectivity when used as a wifi hotspot (screen off). How bonkers is that...

Pretty bonkers. I wish more hardware developers would take Apple's approach of putting ginormous batteries in their devices. I love my Galaxy Nexus, but my lord the battery life is horrendous.

I use this and I've never had a problem with battery life. Although I doubt it is much/if any better than what you are using.
