Default What if...the internet went "offline"
How would your daily life personally change if the internet went out globally for an undetermined amount of time?

I would bathe in the tears of all the crack addicts who can't check twitter and facebook every 2 seconds. Life without social networks required people to interact one on one in the real world, and usually didn't involve how heavy your period is and how much you're in love with someone who you're not really in love with but are just trying to validate your existence and get the approval of others in an attempt to seek happiness. I love the internet, I think being able to connect online is great. Video chatting with your grandmother across the country is cool.

But the internet has ruined society and everyone is dysfunctional now. On the bright side that makes me slightly more normal.

I'm going to try and be kind here....that's complete rubbish.

I communicate just as much in the real-world as before social networking, and so does everyone else I know. The only difference now is that when I see people I can ask them about their new job, car, baby, house etc rather than wasting time with "hi, how are you, what's new..." etc. Knowledge is power.

There's still the 'phone.
It may also have the benefit of people being able to prioritise their friends - the ones they want to take time out to contact.

I would absolutely and utterly love it. I deleted my Facebook account for 2 months and I have to say it felt fantastic. I've re-activated it as I was paranoid I was losing out on work (which turned out to be quite true), but barely post as much.

I urge everyone to watch the documentary "We Live In Public" if you haven't already. Some interesting points raised.

I might actually do something useful with the 10 hours a week I reckon I waste.

You might, but females in their early twenties don't. Maybe it's a geographic thing, maybe it's an age thing, but far too many people live their life on facebook and twitter.

TBH I waste huge amounts of time just mindlessly surfing the internet or playing on the PC.... I think if it didn’t exist I would probably be more "functional" but I would also be less knowledgeable

I remember the blackout. When the East side of the USA has no power.

NYC, hot summer day. It was semi ghost town like. Almost next to no cars on the street. People drinking and playing music on the street. Some people just walk around. Oh, and just when you think the old radio was out of date. HAHA.. people were listening to it. I wonder when is the next one. [xmaslaugh] Also, store giving out free ice cream. =D

During that time. I work at 36th street, and I walk home to Spring Street. Still in Manhattan. So, I was lucky. =D.

I think my block got back power around the 4th day.. We were last. Even Union Sq. got their power back first.

Then everyone would have to start doing some work again; the world economy would come out of recession, Cancer and Aids would be cured, faster than light travel would be cracked, Alien life would be discovered, (in Bradford,) Religion would die out in 12 months, all wars would cease and i'd finally put that cupboard up.

I would unplug it for ten seconds, then plug it back in and continue on with the awesomeness of it.

Made me laugh!

I was gonna say "watch TV all day" like we did pre internet. At least now there would be more than 4 channels. But I fear that TV is somehow dependent on the internets as well these days.

This. And no, people (mostly young) are NOT communicating in the real world anymore, even when they go out at night in groups they sit RIGHT NEXT TO EACH OTHER silently staring at their smart phones surfing the web. I have just witnessed this again last Friday. Its pathetic.

I loved my youth in the 90s, we were calling each other and tried to hang out (in the same place!) as much as possible. Now kids are sitting in their own rooms hacking stupid internet language into their facebook accounts.

I am exaggerating of course, but this is the way it goes today. I dont see many teen agers in cafes during the afternoons these days.

I dont think the internet is the problem but Facebook is. If it was shut down for two weeks that would be enough to get the kids out again.
