So they recorded her face, voice and body simultaneously as part of producing a tedious tech demo that, if my cursory web search is anything to go by, people love. What am I missing?

From what i was able to gather, the demo was run in real-time on the same engine (albiet highly upgraded) that produced Heavy Rain and the tech demo below 6 years ago. Considering the demo only showed off one character and 10 static copies I'm not terribly impressed, but if they maintain that fidelity during gameplay I may need to borrow a ps3.

--- Post Update ---

Edit:

Wait, just read another article and apparently it’s a new engine built completely from scratch off the techniques they learned from their endeavor with heavy rain.

Heavy Rain looked just as good during gameplay though, admittedly you'd never get that many characters on the screen in any one scene, but overall I thought it looked excellent, and still does tbh.

I still have Heavy Rain on the shelf in the cellophane, should I make time to play it?

Check the thread :-

The general consensus was that it was rather good (and it is )

Looks like any other game with 6 year old graphics. Apart from the prerecorded facial animations. But that rockstar game has facial animations as good as that last year.

Love it as a short film. Glad the facial expressions have come a long way from the demo below. It doesn't hurt that the voice actor does an excellent job. Could be a good short novel.

The casting demo video was good as well. Can definitely see how far they've come with animation and facial movements. The mouth was particularly off in the older video.

As good as far as motion but nowhere near the fidelity and geometric detail.

Thoroughly interested to see where that goes. Would make for a pretty good movie or game I guess. Not sure what the gameplay would be though. Action? Mirror's Edge type "escape from the authorities" type thing? Maybe a guided story of somekind? *shrugs*

Had me interested in the character, at least.

Not sure why they are showing off cool tech for the PS3 though when all three console developers have their next-gen stuff already in SDKs in their internal studios, so while this is cool...I at least HOPE the new hardware could be capable of much more. Perhaps they will use this tech on the PS4(or whatever they decide to call it) but will be capable of having more than one moving version of her on screen at once like the PS3 is prolly limited to.

I've heard that this demo is running on a year-old build of the engine, and it's gotten much better since then. It's really a showcase of what they can do on the PS3, so don't expect them to push this to PS4. Also, nothing of this demo is supposed to appear in their next game, which has not yet been announced.

The chick being modelled (and doing the mo-cap and VO) is a real actress, who's appearing in the latest Twilight flick. Good thing they didn't get Kristin Stewart who emotes about as well as Mokujin from Tekken.

While I think the animation, rendering, and camera work are nice, the script is fecking awful! David Cage thinks too highly of himself and needs to hand writing duties over to someone more competent.
