Don't put words in my mouth, i never said it gave carte blanche to use it however you like, i said it shows that there is more than one usage, which it does.

What would be the point of showing more examples? You obviously don't understand how it's used in that context, so showing you another example would do nothing to convince you otherwise, you'd just claim it's also wrong, because you don't understand it.
It's you that doesnt understand. You have shown zero proof that you can use it the way you did. Show me any reputable source that gives an example of using a semicolon in the way you did. You can't, because there are none.
Stop it.
Stop what? The topic of this thread is the use of the semicolon; that's what we're discussing.

I think the usage of any punctuation really depends on the reader. Different cultures tend to have various different rules. Also depends on how anal the person is about it in the first place lol

Thanks for the if somewhat slightly hostile replies to each other[rofl]. I think you have drilled the semicolon into my brain and will try and use it in the future.

Cheers.

Funny you mention that because I did think about it.

In all of the examples you gave the two parts work as separate entities; this is not the case with the sentence we are discussing.
It is Bungle. That's what i keep trying to get you to understand, it's an unorthodox way of constructing a sentence, but it is a valid way. Take the last part of each of those statements, first Chris' sentence:

Shouldn't the semicolon and the comma in your first sentence be reversed?
That is indeed another option. The only difference that would make is the length of the pause, it's personal preference and based on how you wish it to be read.

I really don't think that the rules of a semi-colon are quite as rigid as you are trying to make out. Both sentences read fine, so stop being so pernickety.
