As of right now, I'd say no, the US should not add a national sales tax without cutting other taxes. I could be wrong and, like I said, a thorough analysis of the effects of the tax would be necessary, but it seems a bit much on top of the existing taxes.
Someone in the 25% tax bracket which I imagine most posters here would be in would be (assuming they lived and worked in Philly) paying over 35% to the federal, state, and local governments. To then charge 13% on purchases combined with the property tax, gas tax, and all the other ways in which the government collects revenue, you'd be easily looking at people in the 25% tax bracket paying close to half their income to the government. I don't know. I seem to be the only one so far against this so convince me otherwise. |
