Add a GST? No.

Replace the income tax with a GST? Yes.

Oh, and a 180 % tax on cars - naturally with the 25 added afterwards

We're already at 8% sales tax going to the City of Philadelphia here, not to mention another 4% city income tax.

Another 5% on sales would be a bit much, don't you think?

13% sales tax... I don't know. That's high.

Ontario and BC have higher.

Alberta has no provincial sales tax. Just 5% national.

Considering the median household income in Philadelphia is $30,746 and the official unemployment rate is 10.7%, I think it would be callous to institute a 13% sales tax on top of the existing income and city wage taxes without a thorough economic examination of its effects.

Sweden has a ~25% VAT and a ~30% income tax.

Al, where are you ?

I demonstrate that Philly is a shithole and you don't stand up to defend it - have you lost your courage ?

In case you think that my suggestions are just ramblings, then I can only say that it's real life here

I'm sure that whatever % increase in taxes, our pols would just take it as a mandate to spend even more. Why with that much money imagine how many other places we could invade!

As of right now, I'd say no, the US should not add a national sales tax without cutting other taxes. I could be wrong and, like I said, a thorough analysis of the effects of the tax would be necessary, but it seems a bit much on top of the existing taxes.

Someone in the 25% tax bracket which I imagine most posters here would be in would be (assuming they lived and worked in Philly) paying over 35% to the federal, state, and local governments. To then charge 13% on purchases combined with the property tax, gas tax, and all the other ways in which the government collects revenue, you'd be easily looking at people in the 25% tax bracket paying close to half their income to the government.

I don't know. I seem to be the only one so far against this so convince me otherwise.

By which metric?

They seem to categorically beat you in all of the important ones (quality of life, life expectancy, success at hockey, etc).
:snigger:
ice hockey, an important metric

No Albie, I meant snigger. Snigger has nothing to do with racism. Dictionary definition:

snig·ger/ˈsnigər/
Verb: Give such a laugh: "they snigger at him behind his back".
Noun: A smothered or half-suppressed laugh. More »
Dictionary.com - Answers.com - Merriam-Webster - The Free Dictionary

Edit. Xpost. I have never heard of your definition. It must be American. we have no such definition.

Not this...

Actually by the way, snicker predates snigger. You British (and Australians) changed it; we didn't.

braindead, no the urbandictionary definitions are jokes.

Snicker would be the older term. Guess the switch from snicker to snigger happened after US independence.

By the metric of how many more elephant balls they suck. I heard it from the same guy who tells Alby about foreign customs. Apparently sucking elephant balls is a national pastime there. They also use squat shitters.
