Value is subjective, but IMO educating the next generation is very valuable. I think their pay is low because taxpayers are stingy. The low pay is only an indicator of what taxpayers think, which only shows that they are low value if you think an appeal to the masses is a valid argument.

The value of educating a child does not equal what their parents will pay. Are children with poor parents worth almost nothing? And since public schools don't charge tuition private schools are at a disadvantage. The private school teacher has to be worth thousands of dollars more for someone's child's education than the public school teacher. So unless private school teachers are worth A LOT more people won't switch to private schools and won't drive up the salaries in private schools.

I think what he is saying is that it has a high return on investment over the long term and is emotionally satisfying even though the direct economic impacts don't develop until decades later (when the kids grow up and start working themselves). I can easily see why many people would consider that a rewarding and necessary career which positively impacts many lives even if the immediate economic benefit is not apparent.
