When conducting the pushup/situp portion of the PT tests, the FAC gets down on all fours and watches the member do the exercise while the other member counts the reps. If the FAC doesn't like the rep, he naturally doesn't count it. This is ops normal. From my reading of the AFI, it says that when members are paired up for pushup/situp, the FAC is supposed to "oversee" and "spot check" the exercise being conducted. Why bother with having the other airman count in the first place?

Full disclosure, I didn't do enough pushups on my test. It was my first time on the new one, and I got surprised by how strict it was. My fault; I should have been better prepared. Maxed situps, 36.5" gut, 10:42 on the run.
Recently, I went to the FAC to ask for a quick check on my pushups. I'm consistently doing more than the minimum (35, 38, 36, etc), and want to get the FAC's take on it. The FAC said they were no longer able to do mock tests of any kind, but that they'd be happy to watch me do one pushup. I was then told to get with my PTLs, because "they're really just as correct on good form."

This irks me. Give me a standard, tell me how to do it, test me on it. All well and good. Is it not bogus if, on the most subjective part of the test, you won't let me see how I'm doing? All I'm asking for is 3 minutes of your time, at most.

Are these things happening in other places, or am I just lucky?

Wow, I'm really glad I'm at a GSU right now. I did get tested by the HPARC at Hickam, but it was under the old standards. It was a bit tougher than testing with a PTL, but nothing like the way you're saying it was for you. Maybe you are just that lucky!

I will say this: Based on my experience and what I see here, PT standards and compliance with the PT AFI now seem to be optional and entirely at the discretion of the local commander.

That includes not only what he directs, but what he does not prohibit.
