I am tired of the PT double standard! Comparing office workers that do not work shifts, or weekends and that can close down to do PT, to maintainers and Cops who can not stop working to do PT. Let's not sugar coat it, most maintainers did not get PT time "on duty" during the manditory time, they just extended your duty day. It is nearly impossible to do it "on duty time" when you are working shift work around the clock. You are talking about people that get time to go eat a "healthy" lunch vs. a box lunch on the flight line. You are taling about people that do not have there sleep schedule interupted weekly by being called in at 0200 or having to switch shifts in the middle of the week. They tell us to be healthy, we need to get good rest and eat healthy, try doing that being a maintainer. Don't get me wrong, I am not complaining about my job. We are the AIR FORCE and I put jets in the Air to Fight and Kill and LOVE IT!!! Just do not feed me this line of healthy living and then ask me to work days two days, then come in on Mids for a day, work 12 hours Sat and Sunday, or had to work holidays (because the terrorists do not take days off or celebrate US holidays) w/o comp time because we do not have enough people to give it to you! I think PT is a great idea, I am just tired of being held to the same standard as people who get time to go do it...let one of you tell the commander, I am sorry sir we are not going to be able to fly today because we have to do PT and see how that is taken. We can't even get the acft down to do training let alone PT! Let's be real the PT program has a long way to go and we have admitted that it needs to be looked at, like a guy 6'4 haveing the same waist as a guy 5'5, soon 100lbs will be a 4 man lift, but either way, it should not be costing people there career at this point when know won knows the right way to do it! I hear people say we are using it to cut the force, I hope we as an AF would not be throwing our own out into this troubled economy, if you haven't noticed jobs are hard to come by right now.

Wow, this forum has a lot of trolls... and it's interesting that they seem to be the same people who say things like "the AF is giving you time to workout" when clearly, unless your schedule is such that you have ABSOLUTELY NOTHING MISSION RELATED TO DO FOR TWO HOURS SEVERAL DAYS A WEEK, you are actually being forced to work out in a way that makes the whole process take far longer than it normally would (drive in, workout, drive home to shower or bring a gym bag to the scary base gym showers and forget your shower shoes). This is tacked onto whatever else you have to get done that day (i.e. your day just got a couple of hours longer).
MX's problem is that they have a mission that is always "acute" and they are usually (always?) undermanned for it. I'm aircrew for years now, but I was mx for a bit, although that was a different AF, and I don't think my days were as crazy as they are for mx now. My days are long due to my position (enlisted exec), and I'm in the worst shape of my life (I've been an avid runner since I was barely a teenager). All in all, aircrew definitely get a lot more consideration than mx, which is unfortunate and shortsighted. I would much prefer that the guy fixing the jet I'm stepping to wasn't cranky and exhausted. |

Maintainers and MPs do get the short end of the stick compared to most pencil geeks. It is a hard pill to swallow but without the money or manning it will only get worse. The 'new' PT program will put more people out the door. The AF standards on paper seem good because I for one am tired of seeing all these obese people.....and I dont mean just a little over weight. It is not just one sex. I wish the CIVs pushed their people as hard as the military does. ![]() |

Oooohhh, just what we needed...ANOTHER PT "No-fair-that-pencil-pushing-noners get to-do-PT-and-I-don't" thread.
![]() While I do concur that PT opportunities are far too inequitable across AFSCs, the end is, unfortunately, nowhere in sight. There's always cross training if the OPSTEMPO is getting to you that badly. Then again, things are just as bad elsewhere, and probably in worse ways than could possibly have been imagined. But roll them dice anyways! ![]() |

i feel the AFPT should be for the pencilers. AFSC with special needs and strength such as fire should have there own pt tests. In order to progress in the fire academy you need to pass an assessment known as the firefighters combat challenge course in 8 mins or less. You have to pull hose climb ladders carry dummies and so forth. I much rather do that its more fun but crustys right beating a dead horse in this dept.

With the new boss in charge its not longer mandatory for the commanders to give thier troops 90 minutes a day 3 days week. So its on the member to do it. Instead of eating the box lunch bring your own. Those of you that work shift work can do PT on your days off. The PT test is passable if you dont even do a thing for a full yr except eat right. I understand there isnt time do it during your day, but my wife does shift work, I'm also active duty and we have 2 kids. She still manages to find time to do PT. She busts her ass. I'm a TACP instructor so I'm pretty much garaunteed PT time. In the end you still have time to do PT a some point in your life.

Other things you can do. hang a sign by a door everytime you walk in or out or everytime you launch a jet you do 10 pushups or situps depending on the day. You can end up doing hundreds of pushups and situps during a day then all you have to do is find 15 minutes to run. |

I haven't been back here in a long time and as I read through the thread, I see a few people understand. I see the others drink the Kool-aid. The guy "Your_Name_Here" who talks about the "cross training" option unfortunately that is happening way to often in mx. I would add, imho you are part of the problem. When something is challenging instead of standing up to fix it you would rather run. But then again, would you rather work 12-16 hours 6-7 days a week and do everything you are suppose to do in the AF to make rank, or rather work M-F 0730-1630 and close/open early/late for PT or training...guess I am silly that way I take pride in fixing/watching the acft launch. The train wreck the AF is headed to in the mxs/acft world is scary. We do not have the right people in the right positions with old acft, and w/everyone cross training and getting out in the mxs world it scares me and plenty of others. Then just when we do get some experience we will recap the fleet and will be in the same boat. I listened to senior leaders tell us we (maintainers) are our own worst enemy, because we are "proud" and do what it takes to get the acft in the air. They say we should let it "fail" so people can see what is coming. I guess that is the new way, but not while I am still in. I would ask JD2780, what have you given up to do it? Well you haven't, you are one of the "nonners", but most mx Chiefs I ask say family...and are on their second, third marriages, kids spread out all over. I cant/won't do that..Good luck to you and your wife, hope it works for you tow. As far as the shift worker comment you have it wrong, I mean Days/Swings/Mids...we work 5 or 7 days on with 2 or 0 off. You can work days on Mon, work mids Tues/Wed then back on Days Friday. Not the Panama shift stuff..never that lucky. And the guy STODR talking about push ups/sit ups at work etc...I am guessing you...nope not going to go there, going to just leave that one. Also, I believe it should be "Fit for Life", not "Fit to Fight"...just my opinion.
