Interesting responses in this thread. I think I tend to agree with those on the "Pro should have been more professional" side. I mean, sure, yes, you should know that an expensive (or even inexpensive) round of golf may require a dress code. Yes, the concierge should have provided better service/known what questions to ask when booking. Sure.
That club Pro, however, was only a pro - lower p. A real Pro would have walked up and said something like "Gentlemen, glad to have you at our club, however, before you go out, I must advise you that this club does have a dress code. May I walk you over to our pro shop to find/purchase a pair of golf slacks or shorts to meet this requirement." Not only are would he have been treating you with respect, he would have been providing great customer service, enforcing the rules of the club AND potentially increasing sales at the shop - always important in a touch economy. If you disagreed, the GM can always be brought in for the final decision, all of which can be handled with honesty and respect. |

Dumb? Nah.
Just...comfortable. If it's what you're used to, why would it be different in a place where everyone caters to you? The only reason I was on alert when I played in Vegas is that 25-odd years ago on a lesser but still upscale course I found myself splashing out money I didn't have on a collared shirt so I could play with my buddies. I was totally clueless at the time and looked presentable, but that was my only option if I wanted to play. And the pro was still wrong. Driving away people willing to pay the fees/cab? Seems like poor business to me. |

Great story! I feel like this could have easily happened to me and my pops. As a kid the only course I ever even looked at was my Grandfathers semi private club in a very rural midwestern town. He worked at a factory, had a very nice home on the water and a couple boats. He also always wore denim shorts or pants whether on the course playing a weekly moe game or not. I remember playing several rounds with him as a kid and never once did we ever think about dress code. We had plenty of money, just didn't run in circles that brought us to those places. Funny thing is on my honeymoon my wife asked me to call the concierge and I didn't know who/what that was. Had we gone golfing on that trip that might have been me. Now bringing this to the present, last Fall we started playing on a regular basis and I have since seen a few instances where people were forced to purchase something new or were asked to wear their rain pants even though it was dry. I helped coach a jv team this fall that practiced at a very nice cc. The kids I worked with were held to the highest standard whether on the practice facility or the course and as coaches we always had to keep an eye out.

Im on the pro's side here. He was a snob, but you were ignorant to the policies of a high end golf club. They have a dress code for a reason, and you should feel like you have the right to take a dump on it.
Furthermore, challenging a guy to fight is so childish that I wish they wouldnt have let you play in the first place. I feel sorry for your dad because I wouldve been embarrassed to be in your presence when you handle yourself like that. Also, he didnt assume you were trash. You showed up and expected to own the place in your denim. If you dont abide by the dress code, and a fairly simple one at that, you will be the trashiest one on site. And they dont want that. EDIT: I am not calling you trashy at all. Im giving you an insight as to the expectations of the pro, and the atmosphere of the club. |

The pro? Absolutely.
Do you really think he was upset over the dress code? Honest question. "Jeans is not allowed on most courses". ![]() |

At $450 a pop I would have worn a tux. Since the OP asked how we would have reacted, I myself would have been embarrassed. I probably would have explained the situation and bought the slacks if they wanted me to. I'm surprised a course that expensive actually let you play in jeans at all. While I hate it when other players get snobby about what someone else wears on the course (cargo shorts, jeans, untucked shirt etc...), I always make it a point to find out what the dress code is for any course I play as well as other rules that might affect me and dress and act accordingly.. |
