If you want to be serious about golf you have to get fitted. Don't listen to dom...he isn't serious about anything.
Except maybe this...

Your height has nothing to do with it. I tried out the clubs a buddy of mine bought, we're the same height. I plowed into the ground with it twice. He said they're 1" over. It's got to do with the length of your arms.
and how shitty or not shitty your swing is.

Fitted clubs will help but the only way it will shave 5 strokes/round off is if you are throwing up 150's to begin with.
I think his point was that if I was a good golfer playing with standard clubs, I'd be 5 strokes worse than I could be. But a poorer golfer won't see any benefits - and he said that if I was a bad golfer, they'd be worthless (or, possibly, tougher to play with).

But I'm no expert, I'm a hacker.

Default New Irons
Decided I might look into getting new irons for the upcoming season. My question is, how important is it to get them fit specifically for you? I have a generally average height and size and can play with a set right out of the box, but a lot of places are saying that getting custom fit clubs really really helps your game. Any opinions?

I don't think I want to spend >$1000, but I think that is what I would be looking at if I went with a fit set of Ping G15's. Otherwise, I was looking at the Adams Idea A7 set, unfitted.

I'm not hard core, but I won (through a strange set of circumstances) a set of fitted clubs a couple of years ago.

The guy fitting me for the clubs told me that if I was a serious golfer, well-fitted clubs would likely take 5 or more strokes off my game. Since I'm a hack, he said that actually fitting them would be a waste, and that they'd actually hurt my game more than help. So I settled for 1/2" longer than standard (since I'm over 6' tall).

I'd talk to a pro about it.

Might as well get fitted, or at least measure yourself.

I measured myself, but it would cost an additional $300 to custom fit the clubs to my specs. Not sure that is worth it for this set, buy maybe the next ones I get. The Adams i want don't have a fitting program.

I guess that makes sense. It's been a couple of years since I got the clubs, I remember him taking a number of measurements... but I don't really recall the specifics.

Getting fitted clubs is over-rated unless you're down around bogey golf per round or better.

And of the 'fitting', the swing-speed's the first thing to look at- unless you're tall with alligator arms....or a midget.

It's the stiffness of the shaft that's gonna make the ball slice if the golfer isn't swinging up to that speed.

BTW, a person's height isn't, overall, going to dramatically change the diference between one set of clubs and another. The arm length tends to compensate for a person who is above 6' being able to buy clubs off the shelf versus a person of 'average' height.

But even then, there's no guarantee that you won't end up looking like Charles Barkley taking a swing.

went in looking for a set of Ping G10 irons today, ended up buying a set of G5's. I liked how they felt and the price was pretty damn good. Didn't get fitted, guy said my size is pretty regular and it wasn't necessary. I agree. My arms are both the same length.

Swing speed is about 89 mph. Is that about normal? I have no idea.

Got a used driver too. Couple sky marks, but nothing to keep me from getting it. I am happy.

Yup. That's average for most folks. (high-80's to low 90's).

Put them in my bag today. Man are they sexy.

No 3I though, so I either need to go out and get a 5W or a hybrid. I would be alright with a 5W.

I'd opt for the hybrid. They are the easiest club to hit for everyone in the world except me apparently.

It is raelly amazing, never had the ability to do that. i only hit my 4I, 7I, and 9I. 4I went about 200 yds, 7I about 160. I was happy with both since I couldn't hit my 4 for shit before.

That's the famous driving range new club feel. I've got a ping g10 driver for sale in the pro shop that I crush on the range with a little draw. On the course I hang it out dead right. I'll end up losing about a hundred on it if I'm lucky.

We will see. I couldn't hit my old Taylor Made on the course or on the range for a lick, so it was nice to have some kinda control over my driver again. I won't be afraid to take it out of my bag, at least not initially.

I definitely liked the feel of the clubs though. Can't wait to get out on the course soon.
