Default Best Lesson Ever
I had a miserable morning at the golf course. Couldn't hit the ball at all. I had a previously scheduled lesson at 5 this afternoon and the pro has me hitting it great with just a few changes. Added 20 yards to my 5 iron and no telling how much to my driver.

I can't wait for tomorrow.

Hopefully I'm turning the corner. I hit the ball good yesterday. Hit it good until my back pain overcame me on the 9th hole. Double bogeyed that one and ended up shooting 81.

I limped in on the back 9. Surprisingly it hurt less to hit driver than the shorter clubs, I couldn't hardly stand the pain during chip shots, they were the worst.

Back has hurt me for a few days. It feels better right now but it also felt better at this time yesterday before I played. I'm going to try and stay home today and then play tomorrow.

Lessons are tricky things. I highly recommend them to any player but especially for those kind of stuck in the 90-95 world as I was years ago. But with that said I've been through the same thing, where a pro sets you straight but it doesn't take for long.

I want my distance back. Being silly as I am my swing works for a few holes, then I reach back for a little more and bam I'm screwed.

I'm having a problem with timing also, trying not to jump at the ball. It's hard to get used to a short 3/4 swing for me.

Because I've lost flexibility I now have one of those swings where I don't get all the way to parallel. Hell I didn't even know it until someone complimented me on my "compact" swing. But the odd thing is I've always felt more comfortable with short irons (9 down through lob wedge) with that swing. That why distances such as 141 yards are a real problem for me, for whatever reason I want to swing an 8 full (too much) but I can't bring myself to hit a 9 full.

82 yesterday at my home course, back gave out about the 17th hole.

83 today at a harder course, hit the ball better and longer. I would have scored better but I didn't know the greens and hit it completely through 2 fairways where I got screwed.
Back held up.I think it's because I swing better.

Lob wedge was working. I hit my one duff drive and couldn't get to the green. Got 85 out and put a lob wedge to 3 feet and made the putt. Hit it real well on another hole but I don't remember how far it was. Wind was blowing on and off pretty good and we had to play through some rain.

I really struggle hitting the lob wedge. In what situations do you use it instead of your sand wedge?

80-85 yards.

If the wind's in my face I can hit it full from 65 yards.

Bunker shot with no green between me and the pin.

Sometime when I have no choice but to hit the ball high over something.

Off the back heel or middle of your stance?

Middle if a full shot.

Front if a bunker.

That might explain why I can't hit mine.

The only thing I play off of my back heel is a chip shot.

Outside of sticking the lob wedge for par my favorite hole yesterday was a putt I made.

My one buddy was a dick all day for some reason. "Are you sure that was a par"? "You sure that ball went into the hazard and not out of bounds?" I hit into one bunker and it was full of water. I found the only dry spot in there and raked it, it had been under water and was hard as concrete. "I didn't know we were playing it up in the bunkers."

Anyway we're on this tight hole that doglegs left. He hits a pull slice, he's lefty, and hits a tree way up high right of the fairway and the ball falls down.
I hit what I thought was a great drive, left side of the fairway and drawing around the corner. It disappeared around the corner.
So we get up there and the fairway falls off hard to the left and my ball is gone. From what I saw from the tee I figured it went into the hazard about 140 from the green.

Just to be nice I ask him and his team mate where they think I went into the hazard.
"Well it sure wasn't way up there, I had to hit from back here and I hit the ball as hard as you did." No matter that his drive hit 40 feet up in a tree and fell straight down, and we saw mine carry and was rolling when it disappeared around the corner.

I said Fine, that's ok and go back about 30 yards. Hit a beautiful 5 iron uphill right at the pin. I thought it was a great shot. Get up there and the flag is on the back and I'm 60 feet from it. Drill the putt, look at him and say That's a par, and walk back to the cart trying not to laugh out loud.

Charity tournament today and then I'm taking a break from golf for a few days.
Yesterday I just hit it down the middle and then on the green and 2 putted for par. First 5 holes anyway.
Then I hooked it in the trees, shanked it, hit it in the bunker then, double bogey.
Next hole par 3 I hit it short, chipped it into the bunker, then missed a 4 footer for bogey, another double.
Then I pulled my tee shot and hit a hybrid in the pond. Double bogey.
Then a par.

42-42-84
The game seems easy for an hour, then one hitch in my swing and I fall completely apart.

I only use the lob wedge near the green, inside 40 yards or so, and for whatever reason it's probably the best club in my bag. I swear I hit more good shots, given the degree of difficulty a lob wedge over a trap is, than any others. But I don't do it correctly. I learned that if I keep it back in my stance I may crisper contact. When I tried to move it up, as ryr and most everyone else plays it, I hit it fat for obvious reasons. By playing it back I am hitting down firmly and the ball checks up really well on the green.

A lot depends on the 'bounce' on your wedges. If you try to hit a shot from a tight lie in the fairway with a wedge that has a lot of 'bounce', you will most probably hit it thin. I usually only use my 58 degree club (if you are not a really good player you shouldn't have a 60) out of bunkers and shots out of the rough around the green. I can also hit it about 70 yards with a full swing, but I usually only do that out of the first cut or the rough. If I try it in the fairway, I have the ball farther back in my stance to eliminate the 'bounce'. I need the added 'bounce' at my course because the sand is generally soft, and the rough around the greens is pretty thick.
Here's a primer on 'bounce'...

I hit the ball great for 5-6 holes and then I go back to my old habits.

Working on it.

Shot an 83 today (44/39). The annoying thing is that I was 7 over on three holes.
