Default Tiger as an athlete
I was in my car the last two evenings and Ike Reese was on WIP radio in Philly talking about Tiger and how he feels that Tiger is the best athlete on the planet. He made very good points, but the naysayers were calling in trashing golf as a sport and Tiger as an athlete. It's obvious that people who don't play golf or, more specifically, don't play golf WELL, don't believe that it is an athletic endeavor. That is totally missing the point.
One guy was a black belt in Karate and insisted that he was a better athlete than Tiger. What Ike didn't mention was that if Tiger decided to take up Karate with the focus that he has in golf, Tiger would probably disembowel that moron in a split second.
There were soccer players and tennis players coming out of the woodwork trashing golf, and that just misses the point. It's not about golf, it's about Tiger.

It is hard to say how well he would have done at other things. You can tell by looking at him that he is in amazing physical condition. What we don't know is how quick he would be at other sports and if his body would hold up well or not.

mentally, he is far superior to any athlete past or present. including jordan. his will and desire to win will never be matched by another athlete. i'd like one of those callers to name me one athlete besides tiger who could play 91 holes in 5 days with those injuries, let alone play well enough to win the tournament.

He hurt his knee in a non-contact sport.

This sounds like some conspiracy against Chuck Norris.

One thing is for certain, he's the best athlete ever to play the game of golf. And as Ashey said, he's also the greatest "mental athlete"...possibly ever.

Best athlete on the planet? Possibly...definitely in the top echelon. But you can't argue that Tiger is something special.

"mental athlete" being someone who can contol get their body to do what they want it to do? Golf comes down to making the right swing at the right time. Gymnasts have more body control that Tiger. And athletes who have to actually react to something and then translate that to body movement, I give them more credit than Tiger. If he was hitting a moving ball, and he was moving, the story would be different.

ehhh...the argument of best athlete is an age old one that can never be won. Some could say A-Rd, some Ronaldo (Not the FAT one), some Tomlinson, and many more. It's kind of a dumb overall argument, no way to justiify anything for or against.

yeah, stopping yourself dead in the middle of your backswing at the sound of a camera flickering, no reaction translated to body movement there.

McNabb has played a far more physical sport on a worse injury

he had a broken leg. tiger had a messed up knee and a fractured leg. tiger was on both of them for 4-5 hours for 5 days straight walking all day. mcnabb was on his broken leg for no more than an hour tops. great comparison.

I agree. Unless you have a guy like Bo Jackson or Deion Sanders, its tough to even look at someone and predict how well they'd do in other sports.

Most sports require fast twitch muscles, which I'm not so sure is needed in a golf swing, but I could be wrong.

Tiger is an amazing golfer, but that doesn't guarantee he'd excel at anything he'd attempt to do.

Look at a guy like Jordan, who had no business playing baseball.

bad example, they are MUCH closer to Tiger than any fan screaming at a player in a stadium when they are on the field o'battle

Tiger has the biggest arms of any golfer I've ever seen. His body fat is probably nonexistent.
He trains to golf. Others train to do what they do. The discussion has no end point and is really meaningless. I doubt that Tiger could defend against Terrell Owens. I doubt that he could hit a curve ball, or throw a baseball as hard from centerfield as Rick Ankiel. Could Tiger defend Paul Pierce?

None of these other athletes can compete with Tiger in his sport. He can't compete in their sport. Sports radio is hours of inane blabbering that usually sounds like a bunch of drunken idiots at a frat party.
