Default Scramble Weekend
I played in a scramble yesterday and one today.

Yesterday we were -6 and didn't win anything. -13 won. I won a dozen maxfli's for putting a 165 yard shot to 6 ft. on a par 3. My buddy won the 50-50, 190 bucks, but we didn't win anything as a team. Nice course, nice day.

Today we played in the Federated Auto Parts scramble at a goat track. My one buddy owns a body shop and we played with him. -9 and we tied for first.

They had 1st and 2nd place trophies and said we had to figure out a way to break the tie (guess they never heard of a scorecard playoff). They said a chip off and I was all for it since I wouldn't have to participate.

Then they said flip a coin, I was for that too. Well the other team wanted to have a long drive contest for it, they had a big boy who hit it a long way. My teammates ordered me to go to my truck and get my Titleist driver which they call Big Red.

Craziest thing I've ever seen. They said hit it over this pond, and it has to hit the pond or go over it. No going over it, about a 400 yard carry. They'll tell who's longest by where it splashes.
Big boy on the other team cracks one out there, 30 yards short of the bank. I said sorry boys, I don't think I can do anything with him. Well I put mine right by him. They couldn't tell who was farthest so they flipped a coin and we won.

I also won a real nice leather carry bag for closest to the hole on a 220 yard par 3. 6 feet from the hole with my 7 wood.

Back to playing my own score at my home course tomorrow. I'll probably have a hard time shortening my swing.

I won't make any jokes about carrying a 7 wood.

I'm curious as to what a big strong lad such as yourself would hit at a 220 yard par 3 into a west wind.
On our team one guy hit driver, one hit 3 wood, one hit 5 wood, and I hit the 7 wood.

The other guys came up short.

I'd hit a 3 iron, but I'd come up short unless I put one hell of a move on the ball... up and down for par.

Same here. It would take a perfect 3 iron.

I would pull out my 5 wood if I hadn't broken it.

PGA Tour players choose woods over long irons

There is a revolution afoot on the PGA Tour.
Those long irons that always set apart the very best players -- and especially the PGA Tour pros -- from the rest are beginning to disappear in favor of lofted fairway woods. David Duval had a 7-wood in his bag at Augusta National Golf Club for the Masters. Olin Browne has been using a 7-wood on and off for several years.
There was a time there were only two head covers in the bag of a PGA Tour professional -- for the driver and 3-wood. Now there are three, with a specialty club taking over for the 1- or 2-iron. Duval dumped his 2-iron at Augusta National in favor of a club he could hit higher and land softer.
David Toms used a 5-wood to make the hole-in-one that helped him win the PGA Championship last August at Atlanta Athletic Club. In the same event, Japan's Shingo Katayama unveiled a 9-wood and Vijay Singh, a world-class ball-striker, likes to fiddle sometimes with a 9-wood.
"There's a whole different mentality out here now," said Tom Lehman, who has become a convert to the long putter. "Maybe it started with putting, with the long putters and then the belly putter and now the claw grip. There's not just one way of doing things anymore."
There's a lesson in that for recreational golfers, who have heard for years that they're better off with lofted fairway woods and should discard the long irons up to and including the 3-iron. That's a lot easier to do when they see PGA Tour players carrying a 7- and 9-woods.

They're women, too.

If you were within reach, I would be forced to challenge you to a match to defend my honor.

I would give myself a good shot of winning over the course of 9 holes. My short game would bite me in the ass at some point over the course of 18.

9 holes is for women. Real men play 18, or 36.

My dad used to hit an 11 wood on many par 3's. We laughed at him every time, but he was on the green way more than the rest of us. Problem is that he still can't hit an iron for shit.

18 is just 9 holes twice. You learn to play 9 holes when you golf 5 days a week.

You'd be better off playing 18 3 times a week.
