Default Lessons....where to go?
I have decided I am tired of being an average/mediocre golfer. I am tired of shooting the lower side of 40's. I want to improve. I have thought over the years that I was good enough to improve myself (big mistake) thought I only needed to play more and practice more and maybe even purchase new equipment. I would consistently shoot 81-84 just about everywhere I'd play

Well this year I did all of that. I have purchased new irons, joined a league, kept a handicap index (currently 10.5) and play more than I ever have in the past. What has happened? I have gotten progressively worse somehow, now shooting 86-90 on avg the last month or so. I have been told multiple times by multiple fitters I've been to and by most people I play with that I have a very nice swing, but for whatever reason I just cant score. When I tell them I shot 44 or 46 they are in complete shock.

SO...I have decided to go get a lesson or 2. My question is where do I go? How do you find a good instructor?

Driving Range Pro? Golf Course Pro? The only place I have ruled out is GolfTec or any other indoor facility. Sorry, maybe I am ignorant, but I want to be outdoors to see what the ball is doing.

GolfTEC is not just an indoor facility.

i'm pretty sure that golf magazine ranks the top 100 teaching pros in the USA and they also rank the top State by State. Similar to what they do with the top 100 golf courses. So maybe you can see who in your area is rated in the top and talk with them.

I improved quite a bit via a package of indoor lessons.

I would find a certified PGA instructor. I would also keep GolfTec in mind. Just because you may be indoors, doesn't. You can't learn anything. A swing fault is a swing fault, regardless if you're outside or in.

Yeah I am doing the same as you at the moment, I ruled out club pro because I don't like mine but maybe this is an option for you?.. apart from that I would ask other people, word of mouth is usually the best way to find out, you might need to try one or two though to see what type of person fits for you

also there is the option with the golf channel swing fix where you video your swing and swing coaches will give you tips to improve certain areas of your swing.

I always go to golf course Pros because they usually will be able to do a playing lesson. Last year i finished the year off with a whopping 16 GHIN. This year I am down to an 11.6 and definitely on the up and up with my new lesson package. A lot of my scoring issues were around course management, and having someone coach you through your decisions helps a lot. Also, if you go to a course with a range they can do some straight swing work with you after the 9 holes.

Where in Michigan are you? I have taken a lesson at Miles of Golf in Ypsilanti. Crazy amount of technology there, and for a shop, has excellent facilities (putting greens, chipping areas long range etc.). They do try to sell you equipment, but im OK with that if they can prove it on the launch monitors...

Good luck man!

I LOVE Miles of Golf. Unfortunately they are an hour drive from me. However I was fitted for my driver there last year and was pleased with the results. I really regret not going back there for my irons because of a long drive.

GolfTEC is not just an indoor facility.
All the ones by me are inside golfsmiths and have no outdoor facilities that I am aware of.

Wow I missed that. Thanks JB. Very interesting. I guess I will have to consider them now.

I'm considering going for lessons too. Every year I've been improving & had my lowest round a few months ago, but seem to have not just hit a wall, but getting worse. Would really like to be a single handicap by end of next year. I've looked into GolfTEC & seems to be a good place from what I hear. I'll do club fitting too.

Golftec is awesome! I'm on my 4th lesson now and they are working wonders!! Trust me being able to see where the ball is going is the least of your concern. I was amazed on how my swing looked it kind of scared me hahaha. After fixing all sorts of problems I find that when I actually do go to the range the ball goes pretty dam straight and where I want it to. Fix your swing and get the fundamentals like I did and then worry about where the ball is going. I didn't like hitting into a net at first but after the fact now I'm so happy because it lets me concentrate on the fundamentals first. Also like JB said you can hit outdoors. My pro at Golftec openly offers to meet me at the range or play rounds with me. Golftec is well worth the money they do great things.
