Default Convince me... TaylorMade ATV or Titleist Vokey SM4?
Can't decide which ones to go with... Your opinion is greatly appreciated.

Well, you are looking at two completely different wedges. What are your struggles with your current wedges that you look to something with a sole like the ATV?

Personally, I would choose neither of those two, but if I had to decide between the two, it would completely depend on where I struggled with the wedge.

The ATV has things the SM4's doesn't (many actually), the SM4 has nothing that the ATV doesn't.

Do the math, but those are just my thoughts. You need to try them out yourself and let the club select itself for you.

That's not true. The vokey has the Titleist logo on it. We all know that means absolutely superior ballflight.

As odd as it is for me to say, if you don't know what to get, go with the ATVs. I have the Vokeys and I really like them. But with the ATVs sole, everything you could ever want is there.

I need to spend more time with the ATV wedges but really there are 3 others I'd take a look at too. Bridgestone J40, SCOR, and Cleveland 588. I guess really it depends on what exactly you are looking to get out of your wedge.

Don't overlook the SCOR wedge thread. Many happy Golfers game these wedges.FWIW

Do we? I must be in the minority on this issue.

I think your better off to go hit both and make your own decision's. Lot's of info can be found in the threads about these two clubs, but the real question... which club fits you best? Out of the deeper rough I just don't think anything can beat the ATV, for me. I spend enough time there it's kind of worth while to keep it in the bag, lol.

I think you missed that ode to Titleist thread amigo hehe. Go check that one out and you'll understand.

IMO I'd be comparing the ATV to the Cleveland 588 or Bridgestone J40. Those two wedges alone are better than the Vokey.

Well since you're asking
About two specific wedges, I would tell you to go with the ATV. I think it has much cooler sole technology and they also conducted forum testing with THP. That in itself would push me one direction.

I give the nod to the ATV's because I love them, but as I said above, you really need to try them out yourself. My other recommendations for must try's are Scors (never hit them personally but have heard great thing) and Callaway Forged (have hit them, and like them a lot).

I second dirkules' motion. Absolutely perfect balloons. But honestly although i game neither, I lean to the vokey for some reason.

Could you expand on why you would choose one over the other based on someones struggles. What would one problem make you choose the ATV and what problems would have you chose the Vokey? Thanks

Sure. I played Vokey wedges for years. Fine wedges that work very well. They are slightly head heavy to me and because of that they dont work all that well for me compared to a few others. The ATV wedges are very different. Larger sole that is newly designed for many reasons and myself and others have found them to be very versatile. When it comes down to my choice, I go with wedges for 3 reasons.

Versatility
Balance
Look

Most wedges (not all) are not forgiving and are geared towards being versatile for the multitude of shots you will have to hit with them. I find some have leading edge designs that I do not care for (see Mizuno line MPR line last year), others are too head heavy (see Vokey). Others still fit my game rather well. See Cleveland 588, Callaway Forged (ironic since I did not care for the Jaws), SCOR, J40 and quite a few others.

The idea behind the ATV is simple-one versatile wedge that allows users to hit different shots with one wedge. The ATV sole features a relative bounce angle which is determined by how the sole and face are relative to the ground. Like I had mentioned before, my custom 56 10 Vokey was decent out of the sand but I couldn't do many shots properly with it besides the sand bunker shots. With the ATV, I've played it in muck, rocky sand, tight lies, knee high rough, shallow rough, played flop shots, chips, pitches, and I've been able to play them effectively without worrying about the proper bounce angle.

In my opinion, the SM4 is a great option, and is great off the shelf-I got mine custom made through the pro shop which contacted Vokey with the order by the way( I got the loft/bounce combo I wanted with the Project x 5.5 shaft and a nice little grind-but the ATV off the shelf was great for me and it outperformed the custom Vokey I had made. . .
