I hit my driver on average 240. I can and do break 80. It all rests on getting up and down when you have to

Of course its possible. Heck, its not just possible, it can be done. A group of THPers just went out a few months ago and played a local course, that is quite tough and the rule was nothing longer than a 3 hybrid in your bag. Played it from right around 6000 yards and Trout Bum, myself, Tadashi and I think one other person all shot 78 or better. Heck, I bet more people than you think would play better without the driver due to their struggles.

The average 6100 yard course is going to have most of the par 4s around the 350-360 yard mark. Some a little more and some a little less. That will give you a short iron into the green still.

FWIW, the 1st reply is quite funny.
This is exactly what popped in to my mind. I think the best round of golf I have ever had at Westchase was that day leaving the driver in the bag the entire round.

Meredith Duncan on the LPGA Tour averages 75 strokes a round this year and is averaging 225 yard drives. Don't they play on courses longer than 6,100 yards most of the time?

Your friend is an idiot, to be blunt...., it is quite possible to break 80 for anyone else pending they hit the rest of the sticks well...including the putter.
I echo the above statement from hart... It is completely possible. I played with an elderly gentleman, if I'd guess he was in his late 70s early 80s. He hit his driver maybe 200 yards and shot a 78. When he hit his clubs they were dead straight and exactly where he wanted them. I don't remember him missing a fairway the entire round. Not only were his irons dead on but his short game was the best of anyone I've ever played with. He never 3 putted and if he didn't make hit first putt he definitely left a tap in for a two. He was a joy to play with and an inspiration. Btw, he played the same tees as me at the time, we played from the whites (I don't remember the yardage)

I think this article has been references before, but it bears repeating: http://findarticles.com/p/articles/m.../ai_n26827727/

OP, have your buddy chew on these numbers:"Three greens break 90, eight greens break 80, and 13 greens break 70." That prediction is fairly accurate for any single round, and within one stroke about 90 percent of the time when you take the average of four or more rounds. ...... "the golfers who regularly break 80 average 32 or fewer putts per round. (for comparison, the best putters on the PGA Tour average just less than 28.)"

Definitely possibly. I drive the ball 230 and play from the white tees which is usually 6-6,1000 yards on courses I play. I'm a 17.6 now with my best score being an 84. It's the burps back into the 90's that kill me. I'd say the average par 4 I play is 375, so a 230 yard drive leaves me 145, which for me is a 6 iron. I actually score better on par 5's. My favorite club is my M2 18* which is usually my second club into a par 5. I hit it 180 yards, which usually leaves me a wedge into a par 5. When I am playing well it seems that its 1) putting, 2) wedges, 3) overall accuracy, 4) confidence, 5) driver distance, in that order.

My friend drives the ball about 230, hits her 7 iron around 135-140, and plays from courses 6100-6500 on average and has a scoring average way below 80. So definitely possible. However she's going pro, so its a little different haha

Sure it's possibly...as others have said, it's been done many times, accuracy is way more important than distance in most cases. If you can keep the ball in the fairway and can still hit the green then the chances of you scoring well go up greatly! Also work on the 50 yard and in game....that will save you tons of strokes.

Ok, that line got me... I lol'd.

And I agree, 220 and accurate on a 6100 yard course is plenty long to score well.
