I have always struggled on the greens. I've taken lessons, read books, watched videos, but mainly I've bought new putters. Lots n' lots of new putters. Oddly enough, they all seem to be defective. I recently decided to commit to a long putter for the rest of the season. This commitment lasted about a week after I Hoched, Kimmed, and Sandersed about a dozen short putts away.
Before Sunday's round I started rummaging around one of my bags of dead clubs (there are several) in the basement. I pulled out an old Nike Unitized Tiempo that I had cut down to 33 1/2 inches and re-gripped with a classic Ping grip. I couldn't remember the last time I had actually used this putter, but it wasn't in the dead club bag without reason. So what happens? Sunday I have a midling striking day, but sink everyting inside of 6 feet. Didn't leave one out there and shot a 1-under 71 which was do mainly to taking only 27 putts. For last night's round I was hitting the ball much better, but still putted great, this time riding 29 putts to a 3-under 69 and a 4-up win over my match play golfing buddy. Our matches almost always come down to the last hole, so this was quite a rout. For some reason I'm rolling that rock like never before. How long will it last? Who knows, but I'm enjoying the heck out of it while it does. Have you ever banished a club, only to un-banish later and have it perform like a champ? |

Welcome to the SEC by the way, not at your skill level, but putting was one thing that I did fairly well with from the start. I know just what you mean about the "dead club bag" I usually keep them around to put together loner bags for friends, or family visiting.
Last weekend I loaned out a bag to my friend in from out of town, and about half way through the round I borrowed his (mine) putter and something clicked and sank a 12 footer, and next hole another 10 footer both center cup. Now tomorrow I am going to put it in the bag and commit to it for 18 holes and see how I do. Thing is they differ greatly in how they are weighted, my gamer Odyssey XG #7 vs. Odyssey white hot Tour #2 |

I keep banishing my Odyssey 2-Ball to the closet without success. Tried a Belly, but that lasted only a couple of weeks. Bought a SeeMore and tried to immerse myself into their system. Couldn't make a putt with it, not one! The thing is, every time I went back to the Odyssey it was like coming home and I putted lights out for the next few rounds, then back to so-so. Next up is the Odyssey 2-Ball Metal-X as the search goes on.

Could it be the "New (old) Putter Phenomenon"? Some people believe that you seem to putt much better with a new (or old; read: different) putter because you are focused on the putter and how it feels as opposed to overthinking your putting stroke. I know a few people that like to rotate putters because each time it gives them a different feel. Maybe if this one goes "cold" you could re-kindle the putting stroke by switching back? It's interesting, for sure!
