Default Can full tees be bad for iron shots?
I was wondering today if there could be some science behind the use of short, broken tees when using irons. If I use a full size tee and have it almost all the way in the ground, wouldn't that slow down my club head considerably if I hit it a little fat? Conversely, if I used a broken tee and hit it fat, it would seem that the club head would pick it out of the ground a lot easier instead of getting hung up on it. Anyone have any expertise, ideas or even guesses about whether or not this could be a factor in leaving tee shots shorter than normal on par 3's?

Interesting question. I never use a full tee on any tee shot other than a driver. I'll break one if I can't find one on the tee box!

I would think any difference would be insignificant to the point you wouldn't be able to tell the difference.

Good question, something that has crossed my own mind when using a full sized short tee, especially in dry hard ground. My guess has always been no difference.

If the ball is teed up too high you could hit the ball with the top edge of the face and lose a lot of distance. I see guys tee up irons a half inch or more above the ground and it always looks weird to me. I tee medium and long irons maybe 1/8 inch above the ground at most, short irons are pushed down flush with the ground or I don't use a tee at all if the tee box is in good shape. Regarding contacting the ground the tee is not enough resistance, full or broken, to make any difference in the shot, hitting it fat with or without a tee is the same result.

But since you are hitting down with irons, wouldn't the tee give more resistance than just turf, slowing your follow-through?

I may be in the minority here, but I often do not use a tee on Par 3s when hitting an iron. If I do use a tee, it is pushed nearly all the way in to the ground.

I only use broken tees. I've never actually broken one, I keep them in my bag if I find good ones. Don't know if using full length would be bad or not really.

Only if the ground was hard enough to prohibit you from getting the full tee deep enough into the ground.

Otherwise, you should barely graze the tee if anything...so no harm.

I don't use broken tees. Superstition. Always a full size tee. I doubt it slows the club head.

I almost always use tees pushed into the ground on par 3s, although I do occasionally use broken ones I find on the tee boxes. I've never noticed any difference, although, TBH, I'm not the sort of player who can really be able to notice such a minute difference.

PLayed a couple rounds with a guy last weekend. He's had 3 h-i-1's, his best friend has had 4. All of them with broken tees. He insisted that we all use broken tees on every par 3...

I would have declined.

This. If you're hitting it fat, the tee won't make much of a difference since you'd be hitting the ground first.

Otherwise, I'd still say no. It's probably so insignificant that it makes no reasonable difference.

I can't imagine any difference. I use broken tees because:
a) There's lots of them there
b) I'm teeing it low for an iron anyway
c) I don't run out of full size tees during a round as often or need to dig through my bag / reload at the proshop as often.

The club impact is capable of moving the ball a couple hundred yards. Even a full length tee is negligible compared to that. I mean, we're not talking about a nail in a 4x4 here.

But color makes a difference. Don't ever use a red one.
