What is the general thoughts on the swings.... 1) Swing hard and learn to not slice or 2) Stay with a slower swing andbe content with 150 yards with a 7 iron BUT playable more times?
Both, at least to me anyway. Hogan and Nicklaus both wrote about the benefits of being able to go after it with all you have. Off the tee a golfer wants to be able to pull out the stops, and on approaches they wont need it so....

I hit my 9 iron 150. Maybe I'll give you my autograph when we meet.
Oh wow! This site is great!!!!

Thanks all for their help. There are a lot of great comments that you guys have given me that I know should help. I will get my swing speed checked again or try to see if my driving range has a stiff flex that they will let me try.

This site is great

Tiger in his instruction book said that he swung at 80% of his max .
Annika in her instruction book said she swung at 60% of her max.
Ken Venturi in his video series said he swung at 75 to 80% of his maximum.

When I swing my driver at what feels like my max speed, I hit a lot of bad slices and loose 50 yards compared to a little less than my max feeling swing speed. And I get shots that go straight or a little draw and go 50 yards further.

Let it rip. When your at the range pay attention to your swing path and correct that. I find the same thing when I try and really get after one but I have also learned that my swing is really over the top just a little more focus on the proper swing and boom let it go.

Once I figured out proper swing path, I was then able to swing harder (not faster very different) and my drives became massive and straight, I also changed to a stiff shaft and this helped.

-softest shaft that can handle your hardest swing. . .

Bought the Burner 2.0 with stiff shaft yesterday and took it out on the course today. I didn't have a single snap hook all day, so that was good, and my distance on well hit shots was almost the same as my old driver, but now I have a fade that wasn't there before and the new driver doesn't seem to be as forgiving on mishits as the old one. I didn't realize how much different it would feel just changing to a stiffer version of the same shaft. I'm not really liking it after one round but I'll keep trying to get used to it and see what happens. If it doesn't work out it will be a good excuse to get another new driver next year.

So based on my early results, I would definitely try to hit your same irons with a stiffer shaft and see how they feel for you before going out and getting them reshafted and taking the chance on not liking the new feel. It might not be the shafts at all. A flaw might have crept into your swing and you would be just trading one set of problems for another. I'm thinking that might be what has happened with my driver. I'm not a long hitter (260 is about my longest drive and that's with rollout) so I think I might have started to try to kill it all the time and it's making things worse.

Default To let it RIP or not????
When I slow my swing down, I usually hit the ball pretty good. When I let it rip, I slice. I have reg. flex shafts in my I20's. If I replace the shafts with stiff flex, can I stepped it up on my swing and hit straighter? What is the general thoughts on the swings.... 1) Swing hard and learn to not slice or 2) Stay with a slower swing andbe content with 150 yards with a 7 iron BUT playable more times?

If you were hooking I would say yes, when a shaft is too soft for your strongest swing the club face will close over as it flexes more through impact causing a hook. sometimes a slice occurs because the arms react first when you swing harder and come over the top which results in a slice. I had this same problem before

BUT, If you get a stiff you may see tighter dispersion and more accuracy.

Golftec fitters always say to use the softest shaft that can handle your HARDEST swing

I say let her rip and learn to control it. That's my strategy. Hitting the ball long and straight > hitting the ball short and straight. It just takes a while to learn to swing hard and still hit it well. I'm still in the process.

Yeah that took I noticed I had to swing harder not faster to get my stiff shaft working perfect for me but the accuracy and tight dispersion is lethal

This is a hard one because I think if you work on other things within your swing you can create more club head speed without swinging out of your shoes. For me personally I would rather swing within myself and control it than hit it long and all over.

+1. Gripping it and ripping it won't help you lower your scores...

Well, i agree with whats been said. I think there may be a difference betweent increasing your swing speed and keeping a smooth tempo and increasing your tempo. I say if you can swing faster without ruining your tempo, you should be ok. Hope that makes sense.

Rock

Also, i dont know the loft of your 7 iron, but i hit mine 150, and I dont think im a short hitter by any means.

I think there are a lot of people that average around 150 with a 7 iron. I'm around there myself. I'm going through the same sort of thing with my driver. I have been getting a lot of snap hooks lately and thought my swing might have gotten faster with all the golf I have been playing and I might be starting to lose control of the regular shaft. Went to Dick's today and their machine said I am still in the 80-90 range. Went ahead and bought a Burner 2.0 with a stiff shaft anyway since I did seem to hit it a little better and they were on sale. Will hopefully try it out tomorrow if it doesn't rain all day. I'll let you know if I notice a big difference from my Burner 1.0.

some times by swinging hard you actually decrease SS, that is what happens to me when I swing out of my comfort zone, I have regular flex in all my clubs and it fits perfect to my swing and smoother tempo, I think it's a matter of hitting in the sweetspot more thn hitting hard, since improving my swing my friends can't believe how far I am hitting the ball compared to last year when everything was a super hard swing,,I played with this guy once that hit drives 320 yards but all over the place, hit pitching wedge about 180,,,I beat him by about 10 strokes with my 260 drives and 155 or so 7 iron.

If an easy swing gets you 150 yards with your 7 iron, there is a good chance a stiff flex would fit you better. See if you can't find a store near you that will let you on a Mizuno shaft optimizer.

Like others have said, swinging hard doesn't equal swinging fast. I have learned that the hard way, and still find myself trying to kill the ball sometimes.

Swing easy, hit hard. Take 'er back slow then accelerate through. If you are hitting a big slice you are more than likely swinging outside to in (swinging over the top) which is pretty common for people trying to swing hard. If you get the club in the right plane consistently it will do lots more for you than changing shafts.

If you're slicing when you swing harder I'd be looking at getting another set of eyes to tell you whether it's you or the shaft. I'd bet, like others have said, when you're trying to swing hard you come more over the top causing the slice. I know that's what happens to me. The mizuno shaft optimizer is a good thing to check out too if you're unsure on your shaft flex. imho of course...

I hit my 7 iron 150 yards, which is an 8 iron for all of you with new irons.

I moved to an X-flex driver shaft when my SS is a little bit below what is recommended for X flex. I've really not lost any distance, and my accuracy is great, I hardly don't hit it straight.
