I had the opportunity to play a round with Moira, Arydolphin and One-T today. Let me start it off by saying this; it could quite possible be the most fun round of Golf I have ever played.
To start things off, I walk up to my cart and see that my bag is on the Drivers side. 1. I hate driving the cart. 2. I drive a golf cart like a 4am drunk. Thankfully the cart path on the New Course replicates the sidewalk at St. Andrews and hides the fact a bit. Regardless, I meet Moria and we chat before heading out to the 4th hole on the New Coure for our round with Ary and One-T. There is some bantering going on during the first tee shot, random banter and what not. Some shots were amazing (See; Moira and Ary) and some were not (See; Me and One-T). I know during the next few days I will look back and have so many more thoughts to post up, because it was absolutely memorable. But one thing I think back on was that the 4 of us did not stop talking for a second. We chatted about everything; whether it was like as a PGA player, being a Morgan Cup staffer, being a newer member of THP, how we found the site, how the Outings work, tee box tips from Moira, etc; there was always a chatter going on that made it so much fun. Im being serious when I say there was barely a moment when one of us wasnt talking. Like I said, one of the most fun rounds I have ever been a part of, and a big Thanks to THP and Kris and Moira for making it possible. Quick fun thoughts from the round; 1. Thankfully even the terrible tee shots by the non pro players made it past the ladies tee box (that could have been embarrassing). 2. Ary can absolutely stripe his Classic Driver. 3. One-T can carry on a conversation quite well, even if he is hitting his tee shot during mid-sentance. 4. I took honors with a birdie, it lasted one hole 5. Ary had back to back birdies and played those two holes as perfect as could be. 6. One-T can hit the ball out of the water without getting dirty, and still make par. 7. Watching Moria play the game was mind blowing. Consistent and with absolute confidence in her shots, was amazing to witness. 8. Jake almost killed me. There is so much more that I can add to this, but for now that will be my "teaser." Im sure One-T and Ary will be in here to post more up, and I will be back in here to add more thoughts as I digest more about this round. Again, a big Thanks to THP, Kris and Moira for making this happen, as it was a memory that will last a lifetime. |

Now that I'm on a real computer and done with work for the day, I can put up my recap of an amazing round of golf. When I saw "Mystery Guest" pop up as the 4th player in my foursome, I got really excited and nervous all at the same time. When I found out that it would be Moira Dunn, both of those feelings were multiplied by 100. I knew it was going to be cool, but I was nervous about how I would play, and whether she would enjoy playing with 3 "Hackers" that she had never met.
Luckily for all of us, Moira could not have been nicer. It turns out that her mother grew up in Boston, and that Moira is a gigantic Boston Celtics fan, so we instantly bonded over that as we shared our frustration over the Celtics giving away the game on Friday night! We also found out that she grew up around 6 brothers and played on the guys' high school golf team when she was growing up, so nothing that we would say would offend her.....which was a really good thing considering that One-T was in our group. Of course, we still actually had to play golf. I was pretty nervous on the first tee shot, which was on hole #4 on the New Course at Grand Cypress, a dogleg-left par 4 that measures 440 yards from the back tees, which is where we played from. Luckily, I hit the drive of my life and cut the corner past the bunkers and only had a pitching wedge into the green for my second shot. I played really well for the entire round, and part of that was from watching Moira play. She never forces anything on the golf course, and her swing tempo does not change on full shots at all. Watching her hit driver was really impressive, the ball never went more than a couple of yards offline. Her stock shot from the driver was a 5 yard draw, and on one hole that was going back into the wind, she hit a draw that was more like 10-15 yards. I asked her about it, and she said "well, I tried to hit a little more of a draw and keep it under the wind." Of course, she pulled that off perfectly, I felt pretty silly asking if she meant to do that after her response. Another thing about Moira's game, she really thought that she could make every single putt, and her short game is phenomenal. 2 situations stick out to me. The first was on the par 4 #8, she was left of the green in 2 shots and was somewhat short-sided. She tried to hit a flop that didn't work and left her about 5 feet short of the green. I thought she was looking at her first bogey, but oh no, she rolls in a 20 footer from there for par. The other one was on the par 4 #13, which was playing 453 yards back into the wind and had some nasty slopes in the green. Both me and her were about 10 yards short of the green in 2 shots. Of course, she hits this awesome pitch shot that takes the slope right of the hole and ends up 2 feet from the hole for a tap-in par, and I proceed to hit my chip shot over the green and make bogey on the hole. I need to practice my short game more. I know that a bunch of us are equipment junkies, but I was so caught up in conversation with Moira, One-T and War Eagle that I never got a full look in her bag. She's on TaylorMade staff, and from what I can remember, she had an RBZ Tour driver, RBZ 3 wood, Rescue 11 hybrids, and Adams CB3 irons. The really interesting part was that on her irons, there are wear spots right in the middle of every single iron face that are the size of a nickel. I thought to myself "Oh, so that's what iron faces are supposed to look like." I also thought that it was interesting that a professional golfer like her, who obviously does not struggle to hit the ball solidly, has no problem playing a cavity-back iron that some people would consider a game improvement iron. That's something I'm going to keep in mind down the road. My personal funniest moment was on #14, I hit a sand wedge to about a foot and was given the birdie putt. Moira had about 10 feet for birdie, and I said to her "it'll be really nice when I have the honor on the next tee." You should have seen the look on her face, she got really serious over her putt after that! I would have never lived it down had she made that putt, but she burned the edge with her birdie putt. Word of advice: never talk trash to a professional golfer when you are a double digit handicap like me. Finally, the best moment of the entire day was on hole #15, when One-T pushed his drive just barely into the water. What happened after that was awesome, take a look: In conclusion, I want to thank THP for setting this up and giving myself along with One-T and War Eagle the opportunity of a lifetime. I also want to thank Kris and Moira for taking time out of their weekend to join us for the round. Moira is not on the site, but she told us that she wanted to check it out and wrote down all of our screennames at the end of the round. So Moira, if you are reading this, the round was one of the best golfing experiences of my life. If you're in Boston in the future, let me know and we'll finally get you to a Celtics game! |

Amol - that was a fantastic write up!
I had the pleasure of playing with Kris Tamulis, Hawk, and Seth on Saturday morning. I knew that Kris is naturally a shy/quiet person but me blabbing the way that I do was hoping to get her chatting a little bit. We started on number 8 at the new course and after a near death experience of Seth driving us over a bunker (which luckily had no sand on the other side) we found the tee box. Hawk was smart enough to drive around the bunker. ![]() Kris showed us from the first tee what she would be doing all day long and that was putting it about 240 down the middle. Smooth fluid swing that did not change once the entire round. I had heard that Kris plays boring golf and I wish that I could also. Fairways, greens, 2 putt pars and the occasional birdie. So, this is how golf is supposed to played, huh? Here are some highlights from that round for me: - Par 4 and Kris finds her only FW pot bunker of the day. Nasty lie and she can only advance it 10-15 yards. Looking like a possible bogey here. Nope, she nails it to 3 feet from 160 on one of the hardest greens on the course....I 3 jacked from 45 feet for bogey. - Kris' ability to read a green is amazing. She has this little plastic card that was always in her back pocket with a bunch of numbers on it. Had stimp info, degrees, all kinds of stuff. It was basically about figuring out how hard the ball must be hit to get it 1 foot past the hole. She drained every putt within 10 feet I believe and several were for good par saves. - She ended up shooting 70. 16 pars and 2 birdies. Seth and I both shot 83 and we both birdied the same 2 holes. Not sure what Hawk shot. - A pet peeve of Kris' is how her last name is pronounced. I thought it was Tam-you-lis. Nope, it is like Tamales except say "us" at the end. Luckily, she did not get mad at me. - After a few holes I had to ask just how bad my swing was. She was gentle in her word choice and chose to focus on the positive aspect saying something to the effect of "you make really good contact". - I did notice that Kris was playing the RBZ Tour driver like Moira and I asked her why that over the R11 or R11S. She said that she was seeing an extra 10-14 yards out of it and really the only adjustment was looking down at something different coming from the R11. She had the i20 irons in play if I am not mistaken along with a TM belly putter. She was an absolute joy to play with and we all enjoyed every second of it. I can't thank GG & JB enough for the opportunity, truly a once in a lifetime experience!! Few pics from our round: ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

It was nice to see Kris again and she really is a pleasure to golf with. She was amazing off the tee and on the green. Cookie is correct in that it seemed like she didn't miss a putt under 10 feet all day. She has an amazing putting stroke. I think she'd say that her irons were a little off that day, but she still hit all but one or two greens.
One thing I appreciate is that she put up with me as a cart mate and watch me hack the ball around with a real good attitude. She even gave me a good tip for getting out of a hard-pack sand bunker. She's also incredibly encouraging when I was setting up for tough shots. In the end, I played better than I did last time with her, but pretty poorly overall. I want another crack at it with my own clubs! For those interested - here is what she was carrying. I might have missed something, so don't hold this as 100% correct. although i didn't get to play with any of the LPGA pros this weekend i was lucky enough to be in front of Moiras group and with the slow round i was able to sit back and watch a few of her shots and wow was it impressive. and every time they caught up and watched us tee off i was cranking my drive right down the middle must have been awesome to see guys pick up their games all morning to try to play up to her level. saw some really great shots from One-t and Ary and War Eagle too. Heres a pic of Moiras approach shot on 18 at the new course. i thought it was def in the cup when it first hit and took 2 small hops right at the pin.
