Default USGA Handicap
I'd like to obtain a USGA handicap to play tournaments down the road. What's the best way to do this? I'm in Miami FL and not sure of how to proceed.

Thanks in advance.

Check out the Florida State Golf Association; http://www.fsga.org/

You can register there, and the Membership comes with a GHIN Handicap #.

Also, if you can hold out a bit, THP will be offering us members this option as well.

Are you currently a member of a golf club? If so, I would check with your club. Most clubs MGA fees include registration with a handicap system.

No, I am not. Just started playing with a few friends, but would like to take this a bit more serious. I used to bowl in tournaments and loved the competition. Hoping to do the same with golf.

You need to be a club member to get a USGA index, but as pointed out earlier, JB has something in the works to bring that here to THP real soon. Stand by!

FSGA also has a handicap service for around $30, so you do not have to actually join FSGA to get your GHIN#.

Not exactly. There are cyber-clubs of sorts. In Florida - where the OP resides - you can join a "club" based on your location and get an official handicap from the FSGA for about $30/year without ever joining a real club.
