So yesterday I shot a 69, par 71, on the simulator at Golf Etc. We played from 6300 yards. Not sure what to think about this and how legimitate do you think it is? We did play with 3 foot gimmes on so I would have probably missed at least one of those. What are everyones opinions of playing on a simulator and putting up a low number? My lowest number outside last year was a 79 and I am happy to see that a lot of range time and the new custom sticks seem to be paying off potentially.

I shot an 81 on a simulator once (my best score is an 88). The big difference that I found is that since I got a bit of a distance boost I was able to tee off with my 4 iron most of the time without being put way back on a hole which really helped me in terms of accuracy and within 10 feet putts were a gimmie which probably saved me 5-6 strokes on the round so going low is a lot easier on a sim than in real life.
Plus in a sim you always get a perfect lie. No having to hit a ball that's on the side of a hill where you have to take a super awkward stance or so buried in the rough that you can swing as hard as possible and only advance it 10 yards |

Hanks, Kmac, my wife and I played on a sim last winter. We played "Teeth of the Dog", a tough course from the Domincan Republic from the tips, well over 7000 yards if I remember. We ran out of time after about 16 holes and I think I was at -3 or so.
So obviously its not realistic. At the same time, Kmac and Hanks could not get the hang of this and their scores were much higher than they would normally be in real life. So I think its really only a good way to practice making good swings. The short game and putting is pretty unrealistic in my opinion. |

Timely thread, as I just came home from playing on a simulator. Not all simulators are the same in terms of picking up spin, I think the one that I'm usually on doesn't do the greatest job of picking up sidespin, I normally just hit pulls or pushes when the ball is offline, not big hooks and slices. However, the place that I went to just upgraded their software last year, they use the Full Swing Golf simulators (http://www.fullswinggolf.com/). My yardages were pretty much like real life with the ball speeds matching up off of the driver as well, when I used my regular golf balls. The ballspeed was lower when using the older balls that the place had laying around, which are like range balls, which is to be expected.
In terms of scoring when playing a round, I tend to score higher because I don't have a real good feel for short game shots on the simulator. Full swings don't feel all that bad, it's just like hitting off of a mat, which is what I usually practice on up here. They even have a "rough" mat where the artificial grass is higher so that you can simulate the feel of the rough. However, it's still hard for me to gauge short distance when hitting into a screen, and on putting, you have to try to roll the ball over 2 sensors in the floor and hit an arrow that is displayed on the screen for the direction, it's not very natural at all. I usually put in for the computer to give me putts under 6 feet just to speed things up. One other thing, I usually put the settings on "medium" everything (green speeds, location of pins, wind, etc.) so that there's at least a little variety in the shots, makes you think a little when you are into the wind vs. downwind and also every pin isn't just in the middle of the greens. |

I have played in a winter league for a few years now just to keep my swing somewhat intact.
As long as I don't fall into the trap of just swinging as hard as I can, I feel as if the sim I go to is fairly realistic in distances. I have shot some real low rounds as well as some ridiculously high rounds. The season starts tomorrow. |
