Default Do you play off mats in winter? Need opinions on a product.
How many of you guys have to play off an astroturf or plastic mat during the winter?

My club implement this, and it annoys me slightly. I don't mean the reasons, because I appreciate a nice course in the summer months. The bit that annoys me is that I'm playing a ball which sits about an inch or so above where it should, so for the first couple of weeks of summer, I'm topping everything regularly!
Also, lugging about a large piece of plastic mat is a bit of a pain when you're walking the course.

What do you guys make of this alternative? I've got one. I won't tell you what I think, but I'd like some opinions on it. It's basically a piece of reinforced fiberglass, similar to the feeling of a lie board when hitting.

Given your situation it seems like a good solution. Smaller to carry around and not having to deal with the ball above your feet.

I do not think you would get much in the way of turf interaction with this or the plastic mat you have to carry around.

We just don't play where I live in the winter at all. I have never heard of "lugging" a plastic mat around the course?

It's a Euro thing, I believe. Nothing I've ever seen around here.

Paulo, have you seen those felt putting mats? Could you buy one and just cut a chunk off of it?

One thing I absolutely can't stand is hitting off mats. To me it gives way to much of a false positive on striking the ball properly. When you strike behind the ball the club just bounces up and hits it anyways so you can't tell as easily if your striking it incorrectly. I am big on getting as close to a natural feel of turf as possible and if a product can help with that it would be great.

This product definitely looks like a benefit so you don't have to carry around that mat, and it's light and portable something you can keep in your bag at all times.

Interesting concept Paulo and I reckon if I had to choose I would go with this. We don't have much winter like conditions around here. I do get annoyed hitting off of Mats at the range and this could be a pretty cool solution to that in some cases.

I really can't tell much about the Fairway Saver from the pictures but if you are going to be hitting off of a artifical lie, I would opt for the most realistic feeling of the available options. Let us know which that one is.

I used to feel the same way you do, but I have no problems telling if I hit a ball fat on a mat. It doesn't go as far, sounds different and feels different.

Well, if I could play golf year round and some of it had to be done off a portable whacking station then I suppose I would. Fortunatley, I don't have to worry about that though. I don't hit balls at the range if it's mats only, I'll chip and putt instead. I know it gives one a false sense of security but at least you can focus on other things during your round, like scoring or manipulating ball flights or something. You have to find the silver lining.

What an odd idea. Like wearing skinny jeans. That site is strange too. I keep waiting for ED adds to pop up or something because for the life of me I see very little to nothing about the mats?! Where are the pictures? Anything

I don't struggle too much on the temp mats that I take on the course, when it comes to telling how I strike it. But I do need to adjust for them, which I'm not keen on. With this, you don't get away with hitting it too fat.

Interesting concept Paulo and I reckon if I had to choose I would go with this. We don't have much winter like conditions around here. I do get annoyed hitting off of Mats at the range and this could be a pretty cool solution to that in some cases.
I was thinking about how it could possibly be incorporated into a range mat. But, at least at the ranges I go to, you're standing at the same height, so it's not as much of a problem. I don't like them, but I don't know if this would work on that scale.

Having a look, you guys got that right. There are a couple of videos (one incorporating skinny jean style!) but no decent pics. As far as I know, the site is still a work in progress too.

Guess I should add, full disclosure - this is something my father-in-law has come up with and is trying to perfect. Just about all the courses around my area put mats into play for a period of the winter, and it's something he's not keen on either.

He asked me to try it and see what I thought. Gave him my thoughts, but I also wanted to get some feedback on here - any feedback at all will be useful.

Here's what I would do: I would take may mat out there with me, tee off, lay it down next to my ball in the fairway and not hit off of it. I would just hit off the turf.

Spoiler Just kidding Texans! Don't get all mad at me.

The fairwaysaver looks as if all you are doing is teeing up your shot where ever it lies. Hitting off mats at the range or on a tee box is a last option. I have never hit off a mat from a fairway. To weird. Mats are a club repairers best friend.

Why did you have to drag Texans into this? Its got about as much to do with Texans as you do with skinny jeans.

I just don't want them all mad at me again. They're an angry, hostile and insecure bunch.

Pretty much the opposite of paulo! He rocks.

The video is removed too. Hard to say what I think without seeing it better.
