Was talking with my 15 year old daughter yesterday about Christmas and what she wanted from Santa. I was told in no uncertian terms that she would not be getting me anything golf related because I was addicted to the game....it got me thinking.
While i have hit the ball around for about 20 years, (one or two corporate tournaments a year, sometimes none), I really began playing about 2 years ago. I belong to a club I golf every Saturday and Sunday, and practice maybe once a week. I play in about 12 corporate tournaments per year. I host our annual tournament. I do one buddy trip every two years. I have about 20 polos, 20 hats, 10 pair of shorts 4 pair of shoes and 3 belts speciffically for golf i have all the equipment needed and 3 drivers, 3 putters, 2 hybrids, probably have 8 dozen balls and some new wedges not yet put into play. I choose my outfits for the weekends on Thursday or Friday I'm on a first name basis with my local golf retailer and Taylormade rep. I subscribe to 2 golf magazines. I watch the golf channel every day, (Morning Drive for about 20 minutes), Big Break when its on and most tournaments on Sunday and majors on Saturday and Sunday. I will get up early for the Open Championship I go to WGC at Doral on Friday and Sunday I look at golf opportunities on every vacation. And I come oin this site 2-3 times a day, not on weekends. While I will conceed that this makes golf a major hobby, does it cross the line into obsession? |

I like it Canuck! You are an addict along with myself.
Now to be a full fledged addict, we have to work on getting you on the forum during the weekends. What better place to banter about the tourney you are already sitting there watching? And don't forget to tune in Saturday night at 7PM EST - fireworks my friend! |

There is plenty of time in the week for golf. There is time for everything that is really important. The question of addiction comes up when I don't take care of the things that are important. Have you taken care of your chores and enjoyed time with the people you love.
I know people who spend so much time whining and complaining they never find time to finish their chores. And listening to someone whining is not a good way to spend time with the people you love. I know people who spend so much time on their profession that they never finish their chores or enjoy time with the people they claim to love. I know people who spend so much time on _________that they never enjoy finishing their chores or enjoy time with the people they claim to love. |

When I think of addiction I picture a person who needs something so bad that family, health, occupation, etc... all suffer as a result of their addiction. So if instead of paying for a child's school fee's you're stocking up on more gear, or if you're skipping work related functions for driving range time than it's safe to say you're addicted. If the other's aren't suffering then I might just call your hobby an obsession.

Canuck, your life sounds almost like mine. During the spring and summer months (or when the time changes) I'm on the golf course 6 days a week. I would be there 7, but the course where I'm a member at is closed on Tuesdays, so that's my day off. I also have a closet full of golf apparel and 5 different pairs of golf shoes. When we go out of town, I'm also looking to get at least one round in while I'm there. I've got a friend of mine that tells me I'm and addict all the time, but I just love the game. It's really the only hobby I have.
