Default Par 3's = Trouble
My iron game is probably the strength in my game. I'm good with them all over the course- fairways, rough, scrambling, etc... I can hit my 4 iron as well as my pitching wedge. Except I'm having some trouble off the tee on par 3's. All of a sudden I hit my 8 iron (insert any iron here) fat, top, bad misses. It all changes when I step on the tee box. Does anyone else experience this? I know it's all mental, any good tips to overcome this? Do you tee it up on par 3's? Play it off the grass? Relax your grip? Any help appreciated!

Do you tee the ball up or put it on the ground? What I found really helped me was to tee it up slightly higher than you think you should and then try to sweep it off the tee.....

I generally do pretty well on par 3s using my irons off a tee. My main thought is just to have a smooth tempo and let the club do the work. I always make sure I am comfortable that I have enough club too because I will pull it every time if I think I have to hit it harder to get it there.

I like teeing my ball up higher on a par three and choking up on a club. It makes it easier to get the ball up and land with spin.

I like to play it off the grass. It keeps me in rhythm because it is just like any other iron shot

plus it makes me think I'm hitting off the fairway not a tee box. But on occasion I will tee it up- usually on the longer par 3s

I had recent struggles as well. Now I just place the ball on the grass, no tee. Getting much better results.

I always tee it up doesn't have to be high just hate passing up the chance to tee it up. Most time if I have trouble it usally means I stood too close to the ball. i know that that means more practice on my set up getting the arms extended to get the most out of the shot. Hope this helps

I definitely take advantage of being able to tee it up...at my handicap, I usually take a bit more club and choke down, reminding myself to take a nice, smooth swing. Let the club do the work.

Felit0: I am a big believer in using every advantage possible and the general thought is that teeing it up makes achieving solid contact easier.

However, if you are that solid with 4-PW, why are you teeing it up on par 3's? Why would you not play it as a normal shot from the FW with the ball off the deck?

There is a reason you are only allowed to tee the ball up on the tee box, it is easier to hit. Watch the pros, almost all of them take advantage of being able to tee the ball, we should too.

Have you tried clubbing down and hitting a soft 7 instead of a hard 8? My accuracy seems to increase and it's a lot easier to 2 putt par than to scramble.

I hate not taking advantage of par 3's. If I walk away from a par 3 with a bogey I feel like I let one get away from me. I usually don't tee it up unless its 190 or more. If I am making poor contact with my irons that day, I might tee it up. I found that I usually end up getting ball too high in the air and coming up short when I tee it up.

As Bryon Nelson used to say, if hitting off a tee wasn't an advantage, then they would let you do it anywhere on the course!

Try teeing it a little higher, taking a more club and choke down slightly, that's what's bee working for me.

I'll always tee it up if I have the chance. Being a higher handicapper at the moment and being out of practice you have more room for error it you tee it up. other than that I set up like any other shot. I reckon I get more backspin off a tee too but that may be in my head.

well like others have said I tee it up everytime, you're only guaranteed 18 perfect lies a round so use them when you get them. That being said when i tee up for an iron shot, i tee it up really low, you would almost think its just sitting on the grass...

also, i have a really nice 9-hole par 3 course near me in seattle and i play it quite a bit, sometimes teeing it up and playing each hole like a par 3 and sometimes not teeing it up and playing each hole like an approach shot on a par 4/5. Both my par 3 scoring and overall iron play have gotten a lot better since incorporating some routing par 3 practice. So if you have access to a par 3 course i'd recommend it....it definitely beats hitting to targets on the range. (although i still do quite a bit of that)

I used to tee it up but after pulling it left or right one too many times I hit it off the ground. For the first time in two months, I hit the 8th green and not a tree or bunker!

Sounds like you are putting too much pressure on yourself on the par 3's. Maybe for some reason you have lost your confidence on them. Sounds like a nice range session with your irons will do some good.

I've never had any real issues with par 3's I guess. The way I look at it, every hole becomes a par 3 at some point. With the regular par 3's, I tend to tee the ball up with about one fingers width between the bottom of the ball and the ground. Using a tee from the tee box is one of the very few free gifts in golf, so I always use a tee. Makes pulling off the perfect shot everytime a little easier.
