Default Your not always "One with Nature" while playing the game....
My sons and I played a round at Magnolia Grove on The Falls course this past Saturday. Tanner, my oldest, hits a drive and lands next to the woods on the right side of the fairway. I take my 5 iron and proceed to walk into the fairway to hit my next shot leaving Tanner with the cart up by the cart path since his ball was close to the cart. All of a sudden I hear him grunting and yelling. I look up and see him running in circles. Poor kid's ball landed next to a yellow jacket nest in the ground. By the time I got to him the little buggers were in hot persuit of him. Anyone that has run into yellow jackets knows how relentless they are. Took us 100 yrds down the course before they left us alone. He got stung 5 or 6 times. Just glad he wasnt allergic to them. So, the next guy that see's a new ProV1 ball sitting over there better have their running shoes on. Needless to say, if he had a ball that went even the slightest OOB the rest of the round, he left it where it sat.

I know that feeling all too well. Last year I played a shot from a "nature area" and did a little ball hawking while I was there. As I'm raking a nice ProV1 out of the weeds, I got popped by a yellow jacket. Luckily I made it back to the cart with only one sting and the ball.

Like a wasp/bee hybrid X10. Live underground and will chase you down to sting you multiple times. It's one of the most painfull stings imaginable. Vibration around the entry hole to the nest sets them off.

Yeah. Notified the marshall. Doubt he did anything right away because he was looking for the cart girls lock box. It bounced out of her cart somewhere and he was trying to back track the course looking for it. Sounded like we weren't the only folks having a rough day.

Glad your son's OK - yellowjackets are nasty. I have two yellowjacket traps in my backyard to get those evil insects.

Their reaction to anything is immediate as well. It is not like they send out a few scouts from the nest to see what is happening. I guess they don't believe in the benefit of a doubt but do believe that the best defense is a good offense. They just come out lookin' to do damage right away.

First experience for me was my dad when I was a kid. He ran over a nest of them while mowing the lawn and he was allergic. We are talkin about a time when the only help you were going to get was from the town doctor. Thank God he was available that day because my dad blew up like a balloon.

Yellowjackets are no joke. I'm glad your boy is OK. I got hit 15 times while mowing my grass and running over a nest. Hopefully the course management does something about it.

Those Alabama jackets sound bad. I think I would classify ours as small wasps. I have several run-ins per year either on my bush hog or using a chain saw with yellow jackets over here but they never chase me far, maybe 10 yards. For some reason, chain saws really set them off. A few years back, I was unbeknownst standing near the entrance to a nest and running the saw. Within seconds of starting to cut, I was covered up, they were in my shirt, in my pants and all over me. But I don't blame them, it was my stupidity that got me.

The same thing happened last week to a guy working for me, we were both running saws when I noticed him retreating and trying to brush them off. I knew exactly what was going on.

On the other hand, I have had hornets chase me all over twenty acres on my tractor, when you get into a hornets nest you just as well leave that area for the rest of the day. To me, they are the meanest little critters around.

That sucks man. I got stung by a wasps nest when I was 7. Moved a tarp to get an old bike out and the nest was on the inside. Things hurt like hell.
