Default Frustration
Man, this is one weird game!

As I've mentioned before, this is my first year back playing after a 2 1/2 year layoff and I certainly didn't expect to pick up where I left off but now it's just weird.

Before I stopped playing (and for most of my golfing life), it was my driver that gave me fits but my irons were money in the bank. But now, it's the complete opposite. My driver has become my best friend and it's pretty much "point and shoot", but all I'm doing with my irons is either slightly chunking them or hitting them thin.

The only change I made from my old setup is that I'm now using a stronger grip. For decades I played with a weak grip but my misses were too far right, so I decided to go with a stronger grip when I started playing again. It's not real strong (the "V's" are pointing to my right shoulder), but it's stronger than what I'm used to. I love this grip as well as the baby draws I'm now hitting with it, but I can't seem to find the right release point with my irons. I know it's probably something simple, but it's driving me nuts because I was always a good iron player and now I find myself getting nervous over routine pitches and 8-iron shots - shots that I used to hit blindfolded.

I really have to work on this and I have had a few moments of sunshine when I connect perfectly and the shot goes great but then the clouds roll in again. I'm almost willing to trade my drives for the way I used to hit irons but the drives are so good right now that'd be a tough choice to make.
I know it will work itself out and one day I'll look back on this and laugh, but right now, it's driving me crazy!

*sigh*

OK, sorry for the rant but I just had to vent.

It happens to all of us, well it does to me. My putting used to be sick, now its the worst. Pulling everything, just have to work on things and try not to think to much. One thing I have found with golf is that you have to play 2-3 times a week if you really want to get better. Or that time at the range practicing. You will be back to crushing those irons soon.

For me it seems that when my swing gets shallow (flatter) I hit my long clubs well and when I get steeper I hit the shorter clubs the best. Ususally can't have both at the same time.

Get a video of your swing and post it in the "Ask the Pro" forum. Then have our resident pro Andy take a look and give you some advice.
He is really good!

I feel your pain....get one part of your game working and something else goes away, you work on that and get it pretty good and something else goes bad...just the nature of the game.
